Isabella Aitcheson, about 1831 at Salton

Thank you!

Thank you, Archie.  Most helpful.  Slowly they are being tracked down.  I also note more spelling variation: Salton and Saltoun are apparently the same place.  One of the continuing challenges of genealogy in Scotland is the inconsistent spelling.  A stone at Chirnside churchyard in Berwickshire mentions 5 members of my Clazie family, but with their surname written 4 different ways, Clezy, Clezie, Claizey, Clazey.  Who knew they were all the same?

Hi heiserca,

yes spelling can be misleading, Salton means Farm Saltoun is the Village or Town so remember anything ending  " ton " is normally Farm.

The spelling the names being different is down to the person who gave in the name to the Clerk, most relatives you will find could not read and write so the Clerk would write it down his way and ask if it was correct, the relative would just say " Yes " and so it went on.

The Clerks in those day was educated to roughly what a 12 year old child is today so he would write it in his own way.

Happy hunting.

Regards.

Archie.
