« on: Tuesday 29 May 12 19:55 BST (UK) »
Hei everyone,

Looking for help to pin down one of my great great grandmothers. This is what I have so far:

First name: Eleanor / Ellenor / Ellen
Surname: Read / Reid / Reed
DOB about 1822 in Northumberland (possibly West Moor, but not certain)
Husband: Thomas Carr born about 1815 Willington Quay, Northumberland

Children:
  • Rachael Carr born about 1847 in Dunblane, Scotland
Mary Ann Carr born 1 May 1849 Stockham, Runcorn, Cheshire, mother’s name Ellen Reid
Elizabeth Carr born 20 June 1851 Chipping Campden, Gloucester & Warwick – mother\s name Ellen Read
Ellen Carr born about 1855 in Yorkshire
Sarah Ann Carr born 5 Oct 1860 in Seaton Delaval, Northumberland – mother’s name Eleanor Reed

Census records:

  • 1851: Ellen Carr – Shipston-on-Stour (2076/42/9)
    1861: Eleanor Carr – Cramlington, Northumberland (3851/44/41)
    1871: ??
    1881: Ellen Carr – Amble, Northumberland (5120/97/11)
1891: Ellen Carr – LongBenton, Northumberland (4232/110/5) – Not sure if this is the right couple.

Would welcome any advice that can take me a step closer to finding marriage record, birth record and parents for Ellen/Elllenor/Eleanor Reid/Reed/Read

Hi

Re: marriage

I'm assuming you haven't found a marriage on freebmd - is that correct?  As their first child was born in Scotland - it's possible they married there

Hei CarolW,

That is correct. I have tried both freebmd and ScotlandsPeople. No luck with tracking down their marriage or Rachael's birth in Scotland.

I now have some additional pieces of information.

In the 1871 census the family were in Rosedale East in Yorkshire. Thomas Carr, ironstone miner with wife Ellen and daughters Elizabeth 18, Ellen 14 and Sarah 11.

In the 1861 census they are in Cramlington, Northumberland. Thomas Carr, coal miner. Wife Eleanor, born Kirkland. Daughters Rachael 14, Mary Ann 11, Elizabeth 9, Elenor 6 and Sarah 0.

I cannot find a Kirkland in Northumberland. Since the census taker has not been too accurate on his other place names I am now wondering whether this might have been Kirkharle. I have found a baptism in Kirkharle 12 Jan 1823 for Eleanor Reed with parents Thomas and Mary. I am now exploring the possibility that she might be my lady of many of name variants.

If any of you out there are looking at Reed (Reid/Read) families from this area I would appreciate any advice or insight that you may have.
