Alexander Forbes, Bermondsey
« on: Sunday 23 February 14 22:04 GMT (UK) »
I have recently found on Ancestry a record of Alexander Forbes' marriage to Christian Rapier at St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey on 15 April 1711.  He is described in the record as "mariner inSalisbury Land" but I have no idea what this means.  He is also a "Batch of this parish" but I can't find any records of his birth in London.  I suspect he is of Scottish origin but it's hardly an uncommon name so I'm wondering if anyone can help.

The term "of this parish" just means he was living in the parish for the qualifying period!
That's when the banns were called.

It's nothing to do with where he was born. ;D

I read it as Salisbury Lane.

Thanks for clarifying that, I wasn't sure on that point.  :)

Oh, well done - I was sure it was a 'd' on the end.  Much more sensible.  :)

Salisbury lane, Bermondsey  became Flockton street, Bermondsey in  1912
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

This has become a brick wall.  Every male Forbes seems to be called Alexander and many of their females are called Christian.  Since I don't know his birthdate or where he was born, trawling through Scotland's People is unproductive.  I can't think of anything else to do, where to look, etc.  If anyone has any suggestions that I might not have thought of, I'd be very grateful, thanks :)
