1851 Lookup - Clay - Leeds
« on: Sunday 13 November 05 00:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for William Clay, who would have been about 14 in 1851. Here he is in '61. On his 1867 marriage cert. he named his father as John Clay (no occupation given, perhaps dead). In subsequent censi he was always a coachman and then a milk dealer (more horses).  It is possible that he may have been in service in '51 or maybe at home. Would someone have a look for him, please?

William CLAY Servant 24   Coachman (Dom)    born Leeds Yorkshire
"Harehills Grove" Potternewton    RG9 3357/109/4

Thanks,

PeterB

Thanks Nessie,

Could I ask you or someone else to have a look at the image again, especially at the ages? William and young John are the same age but born in different locations.

My Great Great Grandfather was a William Clay, He was a milk dealer according to the 1891 census, He lived at 59 Lloyd St in Burley, Leeds. His age on the census is 53, He is married to Martha (Unsure of maiden name) William is also on my Great Grandfathers marriage certificate in 1907, again his occupation in milk dealer.

Sorry about the delay. William Clay (b.1836) was my great-grandfather and your gg-grandfather. He was married to Martha Rhodes. My grandfather was John Clay (b. 1878) and I would guess that his brother George (b.1881) was your g-grandfather. I have details from the 1881, '91, 1901 censuses of George living at home with his parents. in 1911, George was married to Elizabeth Booth and there were 3 children in the house - Doris, Hilda and Joseph. Considering the date of the marriage, Doris is possibly a step-daughter to George.

Hello Peter,

George and Elizabeth are my Great Grandparents, I see on my tree a John Clay born 1878 whom is Georges brother (Your Grandfather)

This is amazing that we are related, I'd love to find out more about your side of the family.

Daniel

I'm unclear as to how much info you have about the Clay family. You are aware of William (1836-1912) He married Martha Rhodes (1840-1899) 14/2/1867 at St Helen Holy Cross, Sheriff-Hutton, Yorks
William Clay 29 batchelor, Groom of Leeds, father John Clay ___
Martha Rhodes 26 spinster, of Sherrif-Hutton, father James Rhodes cattle dealer
Witnesses Henry Redman Elizabeth Shaw

John Clay (1806-1880) was born in Otley, Yorks, married twice, son of
James Clay (1770-1844) moved from Otley to Farnley to Wortley.
