Obtaining copy of will from 1930's
« on: Thursday 11 April 13 10:48 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have been trying to obtain the above for my grandfather from the Isle of man but they do not reply to my e -mails. I have emailed them on deeds [-- at --] registry.gov.im.

Has anyone been able to get a copy of an old will from them and if so how? any help would be appreciated.

Judy

Does his name appear in the National Probate index?

Can you not get it from them,or is the IOM different?

What was his name and date of death?

have you tried telephoning them - numbers available via www.gov.im - they can be somewhat awkward + generally want fees to cover any supply of docs as well as complete identification - a general request is not it seems often handled - often I'm afraid easier to use a personal rep to request document.

The Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom - it has it's own government, laws and archives! ;D

Hi

I have seen a lot of Isle of Man Records on the UK Probate Calender, and the Registry area is from all over the UK, it all depends on where he was living at the time, when the Will was made

I think it depends on where probate was heard?

E.G. 1936, Abbott, George Edward
of Cronk Beg, Derbyhaven, Isle of Man
Died 9th October 1928  Probate in London 7th December 1936

So maybe for more complicated cases, and/or multi-jurisdiction?

As he (John F Behn) was buried in Rushden in 1934 I assume that he made his will on the Isle of Man. I don't know where the probate was heard how would you find this out?

There is no entry for John F Behn in the England and Wales Probate Calendar.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
