1st Northumberland Field Ambulance RAMC
« on: Monday 24 November 14 15:37 GMT (UK) »
Just starting to search for the background and detail of my father in law,  James Reginald Anderson MM who served with the 1st Northumberland Field Ambulance RAMC throughout WW1.  I have NO idea where to start and would appreciate help on routes to take. Would there have been a War Diary kept by these units?

The war diary for a Field Ambulance unit would probably only have day to day stuff & ordinary men are rarely mentioned.
Are you looking for details re his MM?
Have you tried the London Gazette?

findmypast has two James Reginald Anderson RAMC records with service numbers 1600 and 386190.  There are also eight listings for James Anderson RAMC - it would be worth checking to see if these are just medal index cards or if service records have survived.

I couldn't see James Anderson's Military Medal award in the Gazette, but if it was awarded by a commander in the field it would not necessarily have been included.

All the best
Philip

If TF means Territorial Force, I know JRA was enlisted in the Terrier a month before war broke out.

I would like to ask if the uis likely to be a War Diary for the 1st Northumberland Field Ambulance.
Any advice welcome - Ian

If 1st Northumberland Field Ambulance was attached to 50th Northumberland Fusiliers, do you think there is a war diary of 50th Northumberland Fusiliers? Ian

They were attached to the 50th. Northumbrian Division not Fusiliers.
All Officers kept war diaries.
Some have been digitalised:
