I have been to Waikouaiti, its was otago's first harbour and the site of a whaling station, established in 1838.
Just up the road is matanaka, which we walked to, there is a stable , storehouse, granary, school house and a three seater loo, are among the oldest surviving in the south Is,
It was a really long walk as the gate was shut to keep sheep in, up a really big hill, just about killed me.. my girls couldnt make it, they had to go back to the campervan.
Took a photo out there off a boat made of stick and skins, but i am in the photo so i am not posting it. another one of names written on a door, dates where in the 1800's , so interesting, worth the walk.

I don't know what to say!!  Overwhelmed!  so sorry to have been inconsiderately asleep while you were discovering all that!

I think there might be a letter winging its way to a gt gt granddaughter - is she likely to be in the phonebook or Electoral register so we can check she is still at the same address?

I don't think "Thank You" quite covers it - you have done a sterling job and I am very grateful!

(Thought for a moment, while reading your last but one reply, that you had dashed off to the south island in your campervan while I was sleeping, LOL!  Glad to realise it was a few years back!)

I am going to have fun with all this info & will try to locate marriage & birth info in Scotland to go with it.

You have to start saving , the south Is is a truly beautiful place..  we went there in April 2004, 10 days in a campervan... very different to the north is, where i live.
