Finding serial number
« on: Saturday 05 July 14 14:59 BST (UK) »
Hi there, hope someone can help me out please.
I have a lot of history on my great great uncle, Captain Walter Short.  B 31/5/1879 KIA 20/7/1918
KOYLI . Married Rosa and had a son called George in 1910.
But can I find his serial number, can I 'eckerlike!!   We would love to have the number so we can add it to the WW1 centenary tapestry.

Thanks for any info.
 Chris

Hi Chris,

I have just checked 28 captains, none has got a Service Number, except one from New Zealand.

Officers in the British Army did not have numbers until after WW1.

If you go to
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/browse/C14542?v=r
it is possible to download a scan of the index to numbers. See list on right han side of page.
The nearest I've found is Walter Short on page 338 listed in 3/51. KOYLI was 51st foot so might be connected. This Walter's number is 138879. It says he is dead, but doesn't give rank
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge

Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
