13th Bn Royal fusiliers
« on: Sunday 27 July 14 18:46 BST (UK) »
I am building my family tree and would like more info about my GGF Corporal Arthur Thomas WILLMOTT who served in WW! with the 13th Bn Royal Fusiliers, died on 24th April 1917, and is buried in Chili Trench Cemetary (Gavrelle).

Can any knowledgeable people out there help me about him or how he might have died ?
Regards
Simon

Hi Simon

They are on this link - http://www.1914-1918.net/royalfus.htm If you follow their Division (top right) you can see the actions they were involved in. His medal card may tell you when he went overseas.

Also their war diary may be online or about to go online.

23 Apr 1917 the 13 R Fus were involved in an assault south of Gavrelle (Battle of Arras) capturing positions that they consolidated over the next few days.  They don't seem to have suffered many casualties after the 23rd, though they are bound to have lost a few men.  However, it may be more likely that your chap died of wounds received on the 23rd.  Given the cemetery he was buried in it is very unlikely that he had been wounded at an earlier date.
