John Calder born Rothshire? c1809? lived in Liverpool 1840's
« on: Friday 23 May 14 09:42 BST (UK) »
HELP please! My ancestor, William Calder was born in Liverpool in 1842. Parents John Calder , tailor / painter, born Rothshire? c1809 and Ellen Hawthorn. John 's father was named William too. Ellen's father was James Hawthorn, a tailor too.
The family today believe strongly that John Calder came down from Aberdeen.
I have some possible candidates for John Calder such as the one born 1810 Aboyne Aberdeen. Another born 1811 Banchory, Aberdeen. Both entries on Family Search list the mother as Helen Findlay.
Any help gratefully appreciated. (Also posted on Aberdeen page)

Hi Wallasey99

Why does the family think that John may have had Aberdeenshire roots? I assume he showed as born in Ross-shire in one of his census entries? I shouldn't assume really  :-\ What did he state as his birth place on his English census entries? Did he ever state a county/name place in Scotland or did it always simply show as 'Scotland'?

Did John marry in England? Is that where you got the name of his father, William? As you mentioned, son William born 1842:

9 Oct 1842 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancs.
William Calder - [Child] of John Calder, Painter & Ellen. Abode: Jordan St

Wallasey99, I am sure you have a lot on John Calder and family. Just adding a little on possible brother Donald in Carlisle, Cumberland:

1851:
Donald Calder, 33 house painter and ? b. Scotland
Ellen Calder 31 b. Scotland
Mary Calder 1 b. Carlisle

Have you come across this entry before from 1851, Scotland:

Thomas Cullen 77 painter b. Queensbersy, England...*
Christina Cullen 29 b. Edinburgh
James M Kerrachar 10 stepson b. Edinburgh
Francis Calder 19 brother in law, Glazier b. Edinburgh...possible https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XT5J-3F7
William Calder 74 father in law, painter b. Tain Ross-shire

Address: Campbells Close, Edinburgh Canongate

Can we connect John and Donald to this family?

Monica

PS: www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl have Thomas as aged 27.

thank you very much Monica and Dod! I think we're on the right track with the Carlisle (possibly John's  brother Donald) and the Tain (John's father William) connection.
