Queensway Tunnel Construction
« on: Tuesday 18 February 14 11:21 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone researching the history of the people who built the tunnel? I am interested to find out who had the contract to build it, where and how they recruited staff and if there is a register anywhere of the employees they recruited.  If anyone is able to point me in the right direction or pass on any information I will be eternally grateful.
Chris

Thanks Mazi
I have read the wiki articles  which are very interesting but don't think there are any archives with the names of those who built the Tunnel around anywhere.

I would expect that most of the construction would have been by workmen "on the lump" - without a contract and paid by the day.

I remember a radio programme about 10 years back called iirc "We Built The Mersey Tunnel Boys". I think I may have kept a copy. I'll check when I get home.

Thank you Andrew. I did wonder whether that might be the case. I wonder if the radio programme may be available on line would be interesting to listen to.

Found it! Tucked away on a backup tape.

I've put it on my web site:
     http://www.andrewalston.co.uk/downloads/radio/We%20Built%20the%20Mersey%20Tunnel%20Boys.mp3
(right-click & Save Target As)

The programme starts about 2 minutes into the MP3.

Thanks Andrew for looking the programme out. It was really interesting to listen to I found it fascinating.
We think my grandfather who was a Staffordshire miner worked on the tunnel. It is the only logical reason we can think of for him being in Liverpool in 1926 but would people move from one county to another and take lodgings without knowing from one day to the next whether they had a job? May be desperate times meant desperate measures. I suppose if you were taken on it would be quite a lucrative job in comparison to being down the mine. Or was that not the case?
Once again many thanks
Christine
