Blacksmith shop, New Luce, Murray family
« on: Thursday 12 March 09 22:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi, can anyone help with a photo of this please . I think it was in the  main Street. Wigtown Free press 1924 has a business notice saying it had been taken over by  Thomas Mc Kellar. The Murrays are relatives and had been blacksmiths for several generations. I have census info but not been able to pinpoint the actual building in New Luce yet.

thanks,
 Harriet  :D

I can't tell you if the Blacksmith Shop is visible, but there are pictures of Main Street here
http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=5619606

The Smithy is shown on an old map, choose sheet 3, Stranraer, then zoom in on New Luce
http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/oneinch_2nd_list.html

There is in fact a Smith Lane in New Luce, but not in quite the same place as shown on the map, so maybe there was more than one in the past, or it moved?

I have traced my grand fathers grandfather, Samuel Murray to the blacksmiths in New luce.
I have him living ther in 1851 with wife Minnie or Manney and first son John. I cannot locate them in 1861 but they re appear in 1871 back in the village.
Can anyone help with further information?

Hi Nanamurray

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

These children show for Samuel and wife Minnie (Gown)

1. John MURRAY chr. 18 NOV 1850 New Luce, Wigtown
2. Jane MURRAY b. 18 FEB 1855 New Luce, Wigtown
3. Samuel MURRAY b. 23 NOV 1859 New Luce, Wigtown
4. Mary MURRAYb.  28 MAY 1866 New Luce, Wigtown

A few gaps show there. Maybe down to the way the mother's name of Minnie has been registered (this is from IGI www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/igi/search_igi.asp?batch_number=C118931&region=2&batch_search=true ).

The 1855 birth if you haven't viewed it on Scotlands People would be a great one for you to view given how much extra info was included for one year only on 1855 cert (the first year of official registration in Scotland(.

Hi Nanamurray and MonicaL

Firstly I have Pm'd Nanamurray as my husband is related to Samuel Murray in exactly same way so that was a real surprise- hope we can swap notes.

Secondly Thanks MonicaL for the hint about 1855 Scotland census I looked Jane up and bingo ggranpa was born in County Armagh, Ireland- unfortunately I cannot read what the parish is - it looks to me like maybe Drummond but no parish of that name ?

Great site this !

Hi June

Sometimes the writing is hard to make out isn't.

Two suggestions for you...

Whenever you have download an image from SP where you have problems reading from the image due to poor/faint writing for example, you can contact SP to arrange for them to send you via email an enhanced section. Can make a big difference to being able to read something more clearly. See www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=1210

SP are pretty quick at responding to these types of queries. In the meantime, you could post just the relevant section you are struggling with here on RC on the Deciphering & Recognition Help board and ask for some help trying to figure it out - www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,425.0.html

Monica  :)

Monical and 2Harriot. Thankyou for your help.
I was so excited when I logged on tonight and found your replies.
The 1861 census has filled in a big gap for me.
I am quite new at this and your suggestions as to where to go to find more information will be very useful.
MonicaL I have found that the spelling of the names do change quite a lot. I am beginning to get wise to this now. Thanks for the pointer that Minnie's maiden name was Gown. That has opened a whole new line of enquiry.
2Harriot which member of the murray family are you following?
Samuel junior b1859 is my grandads father. He left Scotland as a young man and moved to Manchester where he married my grandads mother Martha.
I have been struggling along on my own trying to piece together snippets of information. I cannot thank you both enough for your help.
