How did he get to an industrial school?
« on: Wednesday 13 August 14 19:10 BST (UK) »
In a branch of the family I found a record of Richard Spencer at York Industrial School in 1881. He would be about 13. He was born in Brampton, Nr. Chesterfield. Sheffield would have been much closer to his birth place. No records exist of the school  at York.
Interestingly another boy of about the same age and born in the same village was also at the same school in York. There may be some connection but have no idea what it might be.
Any thoughts from the bright ideas department please?

Have you tracked his parents or siblings on the 1881 census?  If his parents were alive it could indicate that Richard had got into trouble.  It would not be unusual for Richard (and the other boy?) to be sent well away from their local area.
Please help me to help you by citing sources for information.

We recently had a talk on a local workhouse in Cheshire. The speaker included what was virtually a life history of a boy born blind. The Board of Guardians paid for him to go to a school in Yorkshire to learn to weave baskets so that he could support himself as an adult, which he did for many years. I can't remember exactly where in Yorkshire the school was, claytonbradley

I have an ancestor who was from Abingdon, Berkshire and (like your lad) sent to an Industrial school some distance from home - in his case Clifton near Bristol. He was there in 1881, while his parents and siblings were in Abingdon. I managed to find out the circumstances of his admission to the industrial school through local newspapers. As far as I could see he was a persistent truant from school, so bad that his father was summonsed for not sending him to school. This was March 1878 and the comment was made by the magistrate that these were the first cases that the School Attendance Committee had prosecuted and they intended to put the Act rigorously into force in the Borough.
