Thomas Saunders/Sanders, b. abt 1777
« on: Thursday 14 August 14 10:24 BST (UK) »
This is an extract from the 1851 census for the village of Kingsbury in Warwickshire.  Thomas Saunders (sometimes Sanders) is a 74yo (so b. abt 1777) carpenter from .... where exactly ?  It's been transcribed as Stapleton Derbyshire, but I'm not convinced.  On the 1841 census he's also in Kingsbury, listed as born in county.  Hum - not helpful!

Anyone any better ideas, or better still, find me a baptism for him [optimists r us today] ;)

Thanks

Sounds like he is "on the cusp" - are there any villages on the border between Kingsbury Warwickshire and Derbyshire that might fit?

I have him marrying in 1803 in Baddesley Ensor to an Ann Sharrott.  She's OTP and he's said to be "of Grendon" (just a few miles from Baddesley Ensor), but Grendon could just have been where he was living at the time the banns were read etc.

Interesting find for the Kingsbury baptism.  Will swoosh off and see what it looks like!

Thanks

It doesn't look like much!  Family search have it but no image or anything.

However there is one in 1772 same place same names for child and parents on Anc.

Found them both now, thanks.  In between the two Thomas baptisms(1772 and 1777), there an Elizabeth in 1774.  Can't see a burial for the 1772 Thomas, so am now puzzled.   Two Thomas and Sarah's in the same small village, perhaps?  How inconsiderate!

But ...

 ... there's always a but ... ;)

Why would the enumerator write down that Thomas was from somewhere unreadable in Derbyshire if he was born, and still living, in Kingsbury (where the census was taken)?

Maybe the previous household had someone from somewhere unreadable in Derbyshire and the enumerator got carried away  ;D

Seriously is worth a look  ;)

Nobody else on that page from anywhere other than Kingsbury, Hurley (next village) or Birmingham. :(

Have just looked at the image on FindMyPast and it's clearer there than on Ancestry.  Clearly written as Stapleton.  Problem is, I can't find a place called Stapleton in Derbyshire.  There's one in Leicestershire though, even though it's SW Leicestershire about 10miles from the Warwickshire border and about 20miles from Kingsbury.  Perhaps I should try the Leicestershire board?  ;)

Still scratching my head   ???
