The last of my Coulters for now
« on: Thursday 15 May 14 15:41 BST (UK) »

This is the last of my many Coulters I have to find at the moment.

William McQuisten Coulter born in 1820 Ballantrae he was the son of Alexander Coulter and Sarah McQuisten.
I only have him in 1864 when he was bestman at the wedding of his brother Alexander to their cousin Margaret McTaggart Cunningham .

I suspect he was a seaman like the majority of the Coulters from Ayrshire that I have researched.

I am trying to find his death ---

Thank you.
Regards,
Jessie

Hi ev,
Thank you for this information unfortunately for some reason or other I cannot find

William and Janet on any other census a marriage or the births of their sons .

I'll have another go tomorrow unless of course someone comes up trumps for me.

Thanks again.

Jessie

I thought this might be Janet with children on 1861 - transcription in part from index not great. Original image will help in this respect also to confirm Janet's marital status but you mention that you have William as a witness to brother's marriage in 1864. Can you be certain that it is the  correct William as a witness? The original image for 1861 will at least show Janet as married or widowed to let you check further :

Janet Coulter 33 Shawt Frinpw (spl?) b. Wishaw
Alexander Coulter bookbinder 13 b. Glasgow
K(?w)illian Coulter 10 b. Glasgow
John Coulter 6 b. Glasgow

Address: 8 Mcpherson St, Glasgow/High Church

Struggled further with 1871, but jumping to 1881:

Alexander Coulter 34 Letter Press Printer b. Glasgow
Mary Coulter 30 b. Glasgow
Jessie Coulter 5 b. Glasgow
Alexander Coulter 4 b. Glasgow
Agnes Coulter 2 b. Glasgow
Mrs. Bonner 53 mother Shawl Fringer b. Wishaw
John Coulter 26 Stone Mason brother b. Glasgow
John Coulter 4 newphew b. Glasgow
William Winning 34 boarder b. Barrhead

Address: 413 Gallowgate Glasgow/Dennistoun

So, a possible remarriage for mother Janet....

And with the mention of Bonnar etc, this entry for 1871 looks promising:

James Bonner 50 Bell maker, Paisley, Renfrew
Jessie Bonner 48 b. Weskaro (?likely Wishaw), Lanark
Alexander Couller 23 stepson, book prenter (?likely printer as we had) b. Glasgow
William Couller 21 stepson, mason b. Glasgow
John Couller 16 stepson, mason b. Glasgow

Address: 38 Millroad St, Glasgow/Calton

Two possible marriage showing between a James and a Janet:

1862 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYWV-QM1
1866 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XT1X-VYF

Do you have Janet's maiden name?

Thank you so much for your input Monica .
Janet was a widow on 1861 census . Just shows how wrong you can be I did take the William Coulter to the  be brother of Alexander on his marriage in 1864.
The marriage for James Bonner and Janet in 1862  I am pretty sure is her  only thing is she married under her maiden name of Smith but it states she is a widow.
Ironic thing her father was a mason which William was in 1851 census ev found.
Back to try and find death  or marriage of one of her three sons.

Regards,
Jessie

In Scotland by law, married women never lost their maiden names. This is one of the reasons that the maiden name of a married woman features so strongly: gravestones showed women with her maiden name; Scotlands People lets you search for deaths using both married and maiden surnames which is very helpful; particularly in the early census, a married woman sometimes shows under her maiden name is her family household entry.

In respect of a remarriage, the widow would remarry too under her maiden name as you have found.

You have eldest Alexander in 1881 with wife Mary. Maybe this possible marriage? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTTH-TLD Mary wife may have died by 1891, as Jessie Bonnar shows as head of household at 49 Market Street, in the Calton area, with son Alexander and grandchildren.

For John, he showed in the 1881 census at his brother Alexander's home in Dennistoun. We can't tell his marital status just from the index. There is a marriage also in Dennistoun to a Helen https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTYV-G2D (before the normal date when records start to trail of IGI for Scotland). However, I think this John is a bricklayer from the censuses and shows with wife Helen Queen in both 1881 and 1891.

So William and brother John are still out there! We have't got anything on William since his 1871 entry with step father, mother and brothers.
