Thurstan Barritt twiss
« on: Friday 06 May 11 04:35 BST (UK) »
I am searching for any information about the extended family of Thurstan Barritt Twiss born c 1832 in Altrincham or Rostherne area, Cheshire. He appears on the 1861 Brighton census as a butler, and subsequently returned to Weston Under Lizard and his wife Ann Maria. He left two sons Thomas aged 10months and Thurston born later that year at St George Hanover Square. The boys were illegitimately born to Louisa Pike, who appears on the same census as a domestic.
Thurstan died a widower in 1911 in Pontefract ; his niece -by marriage- was M.E Watters and she was present at the death. Thurston -the younger- is my grandfather. I am in New Zealand. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello jenniemck,

The 1841 census for Millington, Cheshire, shows a household as follows:

Mary Twiss, aged 70, Farmer, born Cheshire.
Richard Twiss, aged 20, M.S. born Cheshire. (M.S. is usually man Servant)
Thurston Twiss, aged 9, born Cheshire.

This would be in line with his place of birth on the 1881, which shows it was Bowden, Cheshire. Millington is around that area.

Do you have him/them in other census returns? I have looked for him in later ones but cannot find him. Where the sons' births registered as Twiss, or Pike?

What sort of information would be helpful to you?

Jo

Here he is in 1891:

Twiss, Ann Maria  Wife  F  57  b Weston Under Lizard, Shropshire
Watter, John Edward  Nephew  M  28  Miller  b Weston Under Lizard
Watter, Ada Florence  Niece (presumably wife of John)  F  22  b Birmingham, Warwickshire
Watter, Florence May  Niece  F  10 months  b Tong
  +  2 servants

and by 1901 he is in Wales!

Finally, just to note that on the 1861 census, he is described as a widower?

Marriage is here:

September qtr 1856
Manchester district    Vol 8d, page 357
Twiss, Thurston Barritt
Watters, Ann Maria

So, why is he denoted as a widower in 1861?!  ???

Stranger again;
Thurston TWIFSSE
Christened 22 April 1832, Northen, Cheshire
Parents PETER and MARGARET
(Source Familysearch. Org Eng/Wales Christenings)
(Ancestry has it as Tripe)

From the 1841 Census where Thurston is age 9 here are the people with him in 1851 Census;

1851 Census
Millington, Cheshire
HO107/2163/215/22
Mary TWISS, 79, Head, Widow, Farmer of 12 Acres, born Ashley
Richard Twiss, 29, Grandson, Unm, Ag Lab, born Rostherne

We also have;
PETER Twiss, Christened 13 January 1811, Rostherne, Cheshire
to WILLIAM/MARY
(So Mary from 1841/1851 Census is probably Thurstons Grandma)

There is a Peter TWISS born c 1812, Rostherne, Cheshire living with Wife Isabella in 1851 Census in Lancs, indexed as TWIESA
HO107/2221/128/38

IGI has a Peter TWISS Marriage to Isabella MAITLAND or JONES, 03 Dec 1839, Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire.
Did Margaret die and Peter leave Thurston with his Grandmother and remarry??

Trish :)

There are a number of entries for Twiss on the Cheshire Parish Register Database:

http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/

I don't know if this will help piece together the Twiss jigsaw.

Jo.
