Good afternoon I am new to this site; so I hope I can get some help???

I am a SUTHERLAND decendant and I live in a small farming community called PINDAR it is in WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

But the family live in SURRY HILLS SYDNEY NSW.

I am trying to desperately to find yes another ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND, and he was married to CATHERINE  their wedding date is as follows 1 January 1829.

THeir children were
CHRISTINAN
b 24th December 1829 LATHERON

HENRY
b 28 July 1832( my g/g/grandfather)
Henry married ISABELLA ELDER on the 30th May 1856 in THURSO.

ALEXANDER
b 12 June 1835

CATHERINE
b 24th July 1837.

I am hitting brick walls do I hope someone on this site will be able to help me solve the puzzle.
I would like to know when did any of the family migrate to Australia please?

Hello aneta

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

Is this your family in 1851:

Ramscraigs, Latheron
RD 38 Ed 17 page 13

Alexander Sutherland, 45, Fisherman and crofter of 2 acres, b. Berriedale, Caithness
Catherine, 41, b. Berriedale
Catherine, 13, b. Berriedale
Margaret, 10, b. Berriedale
Robert, 2, b. Berriedale

If so I'll do some further work on them  :)

This might well be Henry:

1851
Mountpleasant Farm, Thurso
RD 41 ED 6 Page 1

A household of farm servants:

Henry Sutherland, 17, servant, b. Latheron

and in 1861:

Farm Square, Scrabster, Thurso
RD 41 ED 11 Page 3

Henry Sutherland, 27, ploughman, b. Latheron
Isabella, 25, b. Thurso
Isabella, 3, b.Thurso
Alexander, 1, b. Thurso
Hugh McDonald, 26, lodger, labourer, b. Farr, Sutherland
Geroge Mckay, 24, lodger, labourer, b. Farr, Sutherland

I'll try and trace them through the censuses to see if they suddenly disappear with no death record  :)

So, from what I can see, Henry and Isabella had the following children:

Isabella - 23 Sept 1857
Alexander - 7 July 1859
George - 28 July 1861
Robert - 10 Nov 1863
William and Catherine - 6 Sept 1867
Mary Ann  - 2 Dec 1869
Alexandrina - 2 Nov 1871
Henrietta - 7 June 1875

Which of the children are you descended from?

Hi aneta

I'm very pleased that I've found your family. I'll now do some more hunting for Alexander and Catherine. As far as i can see Catherine's surname was also Sutherland. There was also a Catherine Henderson m. to an Alexander having children at the same time but 'your' Henry's mother was definitely Sutherland.

I've found the following baptisms for children of the couple in the parish of Latheron on  SP:

24 Dec 1829 - Christian
28 July 1832 - Henry
12 June 1835 - Alexander
24 Jult 1837 - Catherine
24 Nov 1839 - David
21 Feb 1841 - Margaret

I've not yet been able to find a baptism for Robert (aged 2 on the 1851 census). There is a patron submission on the IGI for just 1849, Berriedale, parents Alexander and Catherine Sutherland but nothing on SP so far  :-\

1861

Dry Hill, Latheron
RD 38 Ed 2b Page 13

Alexr Sutherland, 56, fisherman, b. Dunbeath
Catherin, 54, fisherman's wife, b. Dunbeath
Robert, 12, Scholar, b. Dunbeath
Wm, 10,  Scholar, b. Dunbeath

Dunbeath is about 10 km north of Berriedale. Their marriage entry (1 Jan 1829)shows them as both of Ramscraigs which is half way between Berriedale and Dunbeath.

I've checked the 1851 to see if there was another couple but can't find one so this family is possibly yours.

The 1871 bears this out:

Knockally (just to the north of Ramscraigs, closer to Dunbeath)
RD 38 ED 17 Page 13

Alexander Sutherland, 66, fisherman, b. Dunbeath
Catherine, 64, fisherman's wife, b. Dunbeath
Robert, 21, ag lab, b. Dunbeath
