David Marshall ??
« on: Saturday 05 April 14 11:01 BST (UK) »
Hi, im looking into my 3rd ggrandfarther. We think he was born around 1834 in Midlothian possibly Edinburgh. He then appears in the Chester area living on a farm around 1850 then married a Hannah Dodd in 1855.

His farther was possibly called Thomas but not certain. But apart from this we know nothing, is there anyone who could possibly help.

Cheers
Adam

Hi Adam ,

Quote
He then appears in the Chester area living on a farm around 1850

Was this from the 1851 Census ?

Looking at the Census indexes(if I have the right man) he gives his place of birth as Scotland or Midlothian Scotland.

Have you looked at his marriage to see if his father is named ?

There is also another David Marshall born 1833 Midlothian on the 1851 census in Cheshire parents James & Ellen Marshall ...A tree has his parent's as Thomas Marshall and Agnes McWilliams ...as Ev said you should try for his marriage to see who the parent's were  :) :)

If it does turn out to be the couple you mention Rosie, there are two births for a David to these parents. Likely first David died as a baby and name re-used:

Adam

Pure speculation from my part now  ::)...that needs to be firmed up as mentioned by Ev and Rosie with David's marriage reg to Hannah and confirmation of his father.

I am wondering whether David was already down in England by the time of the 1841 census. There is this entry showing in Great Boughton, Wirral:

Thomas Marshell 40 agr. lab. b. Ireland
Mary Marshell 12 b. Ireland
David Marshell 7 b. Scotland
Thomas Marshell 6 b. Cheshire, England

I thought these entries might fit in England for possibly Thomas and wife Agnes:

Thomas above? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JM1J-6F4
Agnes maybe died before census? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F3JL-7BC

There also shows these bann/marriage entry for a couple with these names in Wigtownshire:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY7L-6WR
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY7L-7PV

Different parishes normally indicate bride and groom's residence at the time of the marriage (they weren't always born there but banns were read at last residence).

As I mentioned, all guesses for now... ;)

Thanks guys for that, I had a feeling about some of the info but I just needed to see if others got similar results to me. I'm going to get the marriage cert of David Marshall and Hannah Dodd to confirm the parents name etc.

Again thanks for the help it's really nice when people reply and help with info.

There is another family of Marshall's in 1841 census in Great Broughton - maybe a brother of Thomas

David 35 born Ireland Ag Lab
Jane 35 born Ireland
Thomas  14 born Ireland
Marrion 12 born Ireland
Alexander 4 born Cheshire
David 2 born Cheshire

Coincidence??? Maybe not!
