Catherine McKenzie Grant
« on: Saturday 05 July 14 15:45 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on my maternal Grandmother. According to marriage certificate, married to John Paton 2nd July 1921, Father Alexander who was a farm Grieve (dec), mother Annie Grant Now Ross nee McKenzie. I have Viewed various Alexander and Annie's on Scotland's People but no mention of Catherine who was 27 at time of marriage so birth around 1894. Family lived near Kingussie.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi

Have you looked for Catherine's birth cert?

When did Alexander & Annie marry?

When did Annie re-marry as that will give a clue for census entries etc

The Scottish 1901 has several entries in that birthyear timescale - none with a middle name and none with parents

Aged 8 b Caithness and living with her aunt
Aged 8 b Canada is also living with relatives in Moray
Aged 7 b England  and with Grant grandparents
Aged 7 b Greenock - with relatives

I have had a look at births on SP and used the wildcard option to search for a Cath* McKen* Grant.  Only one hit - 1895

One of my theories was that she may have been illegit but I think her parents married in 1889 if I have the right marriage on SP

Looks like she was a twin

Hi,

There is another family -- Alexander the father, born about 1852 -- a gamekeeper -- wife, Annie, aged 45 and children;

John 10
Christina 9
Jessie 7
Donald D 4

and a couple of lodgers, in Ross and Cromarty. The occupation is correct for Alexander.
This transcribed version is on Ancestry BUT I cannot see it on Scotlands People -- hence I am unable to check if the daughter, Jessie is transcribed correctly.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

My G Father and G Mother were married in Glasgow,so no clue to where Gran came from, only spoken evidence of having lived and worked on an estate near Kingussie. My mother never met any Grant relatives, but heard of 5 brothers who died in WW1, no word of her being a twin. My only hope is trying to narrow down search on which Alexander Grant and Annie Grant (Ross) nee McKenzie is correct.
If I am correct in what I have found then Alexander Grant (Under Gamekeeper) age 37 of Garbat, Parish of Fodderty and Annie McKenzie (Telegraphist) age 33 of Garve Parish of Kinlochluichart were married on the 26th June 1889 at Garve Kinlochluichart. Their Parents were John Grant (Shepherd) and Jessie Grant nee Finlayson, and John McKenzie (Blacksmith) deceased and Christina McKenzie nee McLennan. Witnesses were Roderick McLennan and Duncan McKenzie.

I am posting 1891 and 1901 details for the Dornoch family just in case any names ring bells at any later stage of your research but see my comments re: 1901 entry

This 1891 entry would be consistent with an 1889 marriage - see my earlier reply

Alexander Grant   28 fisherman b Golspie
Annie 25 b Dornoch
Dornoch ED 2 Page 4 Line 18

1901 - if your Catherine had 5 brothers who served in WW1 - I doubt this is the right family

All b Dornoch

Alexander Grant   37 fisherman
Annie 35
Johann  9 - female so possibly Johanna
Katie  9
Jessie  51 (shown as daughter so age is incorrect)
Esther 3
James  8 Months
Jeanie Ross 30 orphan b Sutherland (age may also be incorrect)

This couple/family in 1901 appear to tie in with the 1889 marriage with Alexander being a Gamekeeper. Living at with Garbet, Fodderty with all the children born Fodderty, Rossshire.    In 1901 Annie's mother Christina Mckenzie 1833 b Contin was still living at the Smithy and Old Post Office at Contin, Kinlochluichart with her children (Fodderty ED: 8 Page 1 Line: 8)

Alexander Grant 49 b Fodderty, Rossshire
Annie Grant 45 b Contin, Rossshire
John Grant 10
Christina Grant 9
Jessie Grant 7
Donald D Grant 4
Alexander Mcdonald 22 Boarder
Dolina Mckenzie 21 Servant

However - as you say David -  no Catherine living with the family in 1901 or a birth record for her in the parishes in local parishes for her.    Just a thought and probably incorrect, but could Jessie Grant have changed her name to Catherine ???

This is the family that I thought it may be (see previous post) -- with a Jessie of the correct age to be Catherine.

I wonder if Catherine had a middle name -- or if Jessie was a nickname? Was she named after her grandmother Jessie Grant nee Finlayson?

There isn't 5 brothers though - but the occupation of the father fits.
