A picture is worth...
« on: Monday 14 April 14 11:40 BST (UK) »

This is my grand aunt Kate and I have had this photo on my computer for a while. Going through my files I decided to have a closer look and realised she was at the monument for William Pembroke Mulchinock.  Not knowing who he was and what it had to do with this Rose of Tralee, I Googled it, as you do.

http://www.iol.ie/~rose/story.htm

How very sad the story is  :'(

It's amazing what you can learn from a 50 year old photograph.

Does anyone know exactly where the monument is?

Spillane - Milltown

"Mary O'Connor is buried at the graveyard in Clogherbrien on the Fenit Road out from Tralee and William, at his request, is buried beside her."

If you find Clogherbrien, Kerry in google maps, you'll see the R558 from Tralee (east) to Fenit (west), at the point it enters the area identified as Clogherbrien (travelling towards Fenit), go into street view and you will see the graveyard on the right hand side.

Strange Irish Genealogy has all the Mulchinock marriages and baptisms as Catholic.

Thanks for that,Gaffy. Is the monument in the actual cemetery then?

No, it's in a public park in Tralee, here's a wider shot of it:

I would fire off an email, asking which Tralee park the Mulchinock Memorial Stone is in, to the Tourist Office email address given here, they're bound to have received enquiries before about this:

As you're maybe aware, there is also a much more recent statue in one of the parks, so be clear in the email what you're after.

The statue is in Tralee Town Park, no sign of the memorial stone there that I can see:
