Any ideas of which newspapers I'd need for details of Leicester soldiers in WW1 - hoping to find a photo.

Also how to access these records

Hi,

The county archives would be a good place to start your search for newspapers:

British Historical Newspapers online holds these Leicester papers:

Leicester Chronicle
Leicester Journal
Leicestershire Mercury

are you looking for someone in particular? Loughborough Library has some holdings for the Leics yeomanary.

I'm looking for a photo of Percy Cherry in the main, he was awarded the DCM and it's been suggested that most likely would have made it into the local papers

Will check that site though Diddy - thanks

Hi
I am trying to find out a citation for a WW1 Military Medal my g.grandfather was awarded but haven't had much luck so far sourcing this. LG doesn't list any more than his name and I haven't been able to find anything from War Diary for this Company. Someone kindly on this forum indicated from date of LG listing and schedule number, it was likely to be from Battle of the Sambre at very end of the war, circa 4th November 1918, but I'd love to find out details of the citation.

His name was Sgt Fred Hampson 158073 RE 257 Tunnelling Company and he came from Kennington, S London. I have contacted Lambeth archives and they've confirmed there were no Kennington specific newspapers in circulation 1914-18, and only possible source could be South London Press. Was just wondering if anyone may have access to a newspaper archive to do a look up for me. Date of London Gazette listing was 23.7.1919

Thanks, Kim
