George Woods from Cavan but whereabouts?
« on: Saturday 30 July 11 16:31 BST (UK) »
My great great grandfather George Woods was born around 1850 in Cavan, joined RIC in 1868 and married Susan Philips in 1876.  I have his RIC records and his marriage cert but can't find a birth cert or whereabouts in Cavan he was from, his father was also called George.  Can anybody help me?  Thanks, Brucky

Full Civil registration started in Ireland in 1864, so there will be no birth cert for George.

What denomination is your Woods family ?

What occupation was George Snr ?

Griffiths Valuation has a George Woods renting property in Yewer Lane, townland of Portaliff or Townparks, Killeshandra, Cavan in 1857. Might be worth checking out the relevant church records to see if this fits.

Hi
I have two marriage records, the first handwritten one lists George as his father but also have another marriage cert from North Tipperary Genealogy Centre and that gives his fathers name as John.  He had nine children including five sons William, George, James, Alfred & Robert so think George is probably the correct name.

According to the PRONI website, Killashandra COI parish has births, marriages and burial records back to 1735. Copies are in PRONI on microfilm. You may be able to find out more from that source.

if you want to order a civil marriage cert from the GRO to confirm details of the father - these look like the required references :

  Name: Susan Phillips
  Registration district:   Nenagh
  Event type:   Marriage
  Year: 1876
  Volume: 18 / page:   429

  name: George Woods
  [same index details as Susan]

see :

  Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon
Details included on a Marriage Cert

Thanks so much for all your help.  Will contact GRO Roscommon and also Rathfarnham next week and see if they have any more information.
