Thoroughly Missing Millie
« on: Wednesday 08 January 14 22:27 GMT (UK) »
Still looking for Stainthorps in the North Riding/Sunderland.

Millicent STAINTHORP born c.1895, Redcar Yorks (according to the 1901 and 1911 censuses). She married B. LEWIS, Jun 1919, Tynemouth.

However I can't find a birth or death*. I'm told by family that she was living on Tyneside in the 1960s.

I can find all 8 of her siblings' births.

???

*Edit: possibility that her 1st husband Benjamin LEWIS d.1933 and that she remarried. Marriage between Millicent LEWIS and Henry BELL, Jun 1943, Tynemouth. Death of a Millicent BELL, Dec 1981, North Tyneside East - d/o/b 7 January 1895.

Still no birth record, though.

Hi Paul

Have you thought about contacting the local registrars to see if she is missing from the GRO index but in the local registers? might be worth a go as you have a birth year and the names of her parents

Hi Dawn,

Thank you - an excellent idea. Luckily it turns out Redcar & Cleveland Council have a very easy search request firm for historical BMD lookups: https://www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/Forms.nsf/BirthCert?ReadForm

I'll let you know if they come up with anything.

That's a good system, most reg offices will do a search but you have to pay up front. If they don't find a suitable match, you get your money back.

Fingers crossed.

Unfortunately:

"I have searched our records and we do not have a certificate for a Millicent Stainthorp born in 1895."

They're fast, I'll give them that.

Oh, not good news.

Just a thought, and a bit time consuming, have you looked at all the Stainthorp births in the index and tried to find the corresponding child on the censuses just to see if you have one entry that could be her but under a different name?

I've started doing that, and ruled out all of the most likely candidates. I'll try working through them all.

I wonder if it might be worth my while contacting Redcar & Cleveland again and asking them to look for all Stainthorp/Stainthorpe births in 1895 with father named William.

Anything's possible, but obviously be prepared for them to say no.

Are you able to phone and speak to someone about this rather than trying to do it by form over the internet?
