Roger Shields born 1802 Roscommon
« on: Monday 25 August 14 12:53 BST (UK) »
Whilst researching my Family History, I found the parents of the wife of my
Great Grandfather was called Mary Ann Shields born Sept. 1841 in Poplar
London.
She listed her father on her marriage certificate as Roger Shields (Railway
Guard) and following further delving I found he was married to Esther and
had the following children Martin 1833, Bridget 1836, Thomas 1839 and
Mary Ann in 1841.
I found the 1841 census for Roger plus his wife along with the first three
children but in the 1851 census he is living in Aldgate with only Martin.
Esther died in St.Pancras in Sept. 1849 and I have Mary Ann Shields in the
1851 census as an Inmate of the London Workhouse as a 9 year old.
In 1861 census she is with her brother Martin in Shincliffe and later on she
went to Sunderland where she married my Great Grandfather Thomas Grainger
in 1872.
What I require is more details about where and when Roger died as he is
listed as deceased by 1872 and cannot find the birth of Martin, Bridget and
Thomas in London and what happened to both Bridget and Thomas as neither
turn up in the 1851 census.

Thanks
Bob

The family in 1841 so we can see who we are looking for

Poplar, Middlesex
Roger Shields age 39 occ Porter bn Ireland
Rest of family bn in County - Middlesex
Esther 28
Martin 8
Bridget 5
Thomas 2

You will not find birth registrations for Martin & Bridget as they were born before registration started.  It is also likely that they did not register Thomas's birth.  Have you considered that Roger and the children may have returned to Ireland

Hi Rosie99, yes I realise that certificates weren't issued until 1837 but I
was surprised that nothing existed about the births of Martin, Bridget and
Thomas in the church records in area of London where they living at that
time.
As I said I've found the burial record of Hesther (Esther) Shields who is
buried in the Church Yard of St. Pancras Parish Chapel and was living in
Aldenham Street nearby at the time.
Just now I think I've found the burial record of Roger in the same Churchyard
on the 18/9/1853 aged 55 years old and got from the details from the Free BMD
site, the transcriber couldn't make out the full surname and put Sh___ but looking
at it myself I would guess it is the one I'm looking for as there is a gap beween
the fourth letter L and the fifth letter which would make it out to be a D not
another L as in the FindMyPast record which pointed me in that direction.
