Railway Hotel - Monks Coppenhall
« on: Wednesday 19 March 14 23:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Helping a friend out with their family research & have found an ancestor of theirs in 1891, Walter Farnworth living at the Railway Hotel, 2 Wesley Street, Monks Coppenhall (RG12/2850/48/35.)

I have been unable to find detail about this establishment at all. I have been unable to pin it down on maps or find any photographs/illustrations of the pub/hotel at all.

Can anyone help?

Any & all help gratefully received.

Kind regards

David

If you go back 2 pages on the census, the addresses are Herdman Street.

On the 1898 map, it looks like it says PH at the Station Road end of Wesley Street

Hi Heather,

Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated indeed.

Thanks for that, at least I now know where it was, near to the railway station isn't much of a surprise at all, given the name of the establishment! ;D

My thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi, David, there are two images of Wesley Street, prior to its demolition on the Cheshire Images. Just use this link http://cheshireimagebank.org.uk/index.php
Enter Wesley Street in the search box and the images will come up.

Kathb

According to Howard Curran's book, "Crewe Pubs" (pub 2004, Tempus Publishing), the Railway Inn was on the corner of Wesley St and Station St and was demolished in 1968. (Don't worry about the difference between "Inn" and "Hotel").
