John McIndow/Mcildowie
« on: Tuesday 19 March 13 09:02 GMT (UK) »
John Mcildowie was born in 1830 ? in Stirling ?, he was married McIldowie to Helen Fergus on the 14/5/1854 Glasgow, they had family who were born Mcildowie. in the mid 1860s everyone changed to McIndoe and the family name has been McIndoe since then.
The death cert for john McIndoe 6/12/1916 Hillhead Glasgow, lists his father as Daniel McIndoe farmer, mother Mary Anderson.
I am unable to find any information on the parents of John and the McIndoe V McIldowie name change, any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi ,

The 1881 Census gives his birthplace as Crieff Perthshire , age 52 , occupation gardener and seedsman.

I agree 1881 is Crieff, 1891 is Braco Perth, 1901 is Stirling Stirlingshire, this maybe part of my problem, could I be mixing up different families, his wife is consistently Stirling even if I am mixing different families, I am still unable to trace a birth cert for John or a record of his parents ? are there any suggestions on best way to proceed ?.

Hi Poppyhunter

Can't be tough (aka fun  :P) sometimes, scrambling around until you find something!

With the reference to Glasgow for John around the 1850s and his marriage there, I saw this entry and wondered if it could connect to his mother maybe?

Mary Mcindoe 46 dressmaker b. Kincardine, Perth
Christina Mcindoe 19 daughter dressmaker b. Kincardine, Perth
Address: 7 Burnside St Glasgow

Couldn't really see many other McIndoe entries (regardless of spelling) in 1851 with a Perthshire connection like John seemed to have.

Then again...maybe not  :-\ This might be them in 1841:

Mary Mcindoe 35
Christina Mcindoe 9
Address: Silve Street, Tulliallan Perthshire

(Birthplace for John senior - Stirling  ::) )

1851 Census transcription on freeCEN has -
John McILDOWIE age 19 farm servant born Ardoch Perth , living St Ninians Stirlingshire.

Ardoch and Braco look to be the same area  :-\

Ev, I wonder if the birth entry you posted for John Jnr will have extra info... it's an 1855 one - hurray for those!

Poppyhunter, this entry in the first year of official registration in Scotland, might give you extra information on father John and mother Helen. Entries ran over two pages of the register and extra info was included for one year only, including age and where parents were born normally.

One last try for now....

There is a Daniel McIldowie showing (where was he earlier  :P) in Perthshire. This is his entry from transcripts, so can't tell his marital status, in 1861:

Daniel McIldowie 70 farmer b. Monzievaird, Perthshire
William McIldowie 60 brother b. Monzievaird, Perthshire
Janet McIldowie 61 sister b. b. Monzievaird, Perthshire
Robert Kemp 32 lodger labourer b. Monzievaird, Perthshire
Margaret Kemp (ms Sharp) 30 lodger b. Monzievaird, Perthshire
John Kemp 4 Monzievaird, Perthshire
Daniel Kemp 2 Monzievaird, Perthshire

Address: Upper Quig, Monzievaird

I am wondering whether this is the Daniel who married a Mary Drysdale? Could a mistake have been on your John's death cert in respect of his mother's maiden name? Always a possibility  :-\

Some children born to this couple who married in 1814 or 1815, both entries in Crief:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY3S-3Q5
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY3S-3QT

Peter 1817 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1QN-Q42
Daniel 1818 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1QV-SMB
John 1820 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1K6-9YR
Mary 1822 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1K8-3ZQ
Elizabeth 1825 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VQW3-BJM
Alexander 1831 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VQ7L-MJ3

There is the possibility that the John born 1820 died young and the name was re-used, not uncommon to do this. A gap there between 1825 and 1831 (that last entry in Crieff), for a second John to have been born. The family moved about, likely with Daniel's work you would think, between Crieff, Monzievaird and Strowan and Muthill.

I saw this entry on the 1841 transcript:

Daniel McHdowie (as indexed there), 46, MS
Address: Ochtertyre, Monzievaird and Strowan

That is as far as I have got for now...

Monica

I did see this on the Wills & Testements on SP.
Daniel MACILDOWIE , dated 29th March 1869 , sometime residing at Quiog Cottage near Crieff.

There is a death , same name , in 1869 Monzievaird Perth , born c1786.
