Irish family
« on: Friday 01 August 14 17:45 BST (UK) »
Can't seem to find any information on my husbands ancestors. They were William O'Neil (O'Neill) and Elizabeth Hamill who were married in 1864 in Magherafelt which is I believe in Londonderry, Ireland. He was 17 and she was 21. His father was Francis and her father was John. That is the only info I found on the marriage certificate.  I wondered if anyone had any information or could suggest anything. I have tried most Irish sites without any luck. I even got in touch with the church they were married in without any luck as their records were poor.

Details were given on your other thread-

Since they were Catholic you can now check through the Parish Registers-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you for your help it is much appreciated. This site is great. I got the marriage certificate but can't find their births. With the help of this sight I may find out more. Both sides of the family were Irish.

Since they were born before registration there will be no birth certificates. Check the parish they married in and then adjoining ones for baptisms but it may be that the records you need don't survive.

Just to note the following until you can rule in or out.

From the 1864 civil marriage record you should know that William O'Neill's address was the townland of Drummuck in the civil parish of Maghera, if that's where his parents lived (there's no guarantee, William could have moved to Drummuck shortly before the marriage), there is a possibility for his father in Griffith's Valuation in the form of a Francis Neill living in Drummuck in a house with just over 2 acres of land (the local print date was 1859):

Again speculative, but a possible sibling James O'Neill was baptised in Termoneeny RC parish in 1838 (6 May?) for parents Francis O'Neill and Peggy McMullin, the address was Drummuck (right page, 3rd baptism up from bottom):

A James O'Neil with an address of Drummuck and father given as Francis O'Neil, a farmer, married a Sarah O'Lone in Lavey RC Church on 13 November 1870, the couple went on to have a number of children and can be seen here in the 1901 Ireland census:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Gulladuff/Drummuck/1544794/

As I said, speculative, so just to note in case it offers up leads.
