Hi, Everyone,
This is perhaps needle in a haystack time again, but I'm trying to track down the origins and subsequent workplaces in the Bristol area of a Louis (later referred to himself as Lewis) HART, tailor.  In the 1911 Census he is living at 652, Stapleton Rd, Eastville, with his wife of 27 years, Fanny, and three daughters.  Fanny is from Leicester, and the children all born in Stroud.  But Lewis is a Russian Pole, and doesn't appear to have become naturalised even though he's been in England for over a quarter of a century.  His age here is given as 52, and there is a death registration for a Lewis HART in Bristol in 1934, that individual being 77 when he died.
So, first of all, are there any local trade directories that might list Louis/Lewis?  And also might anyone know anything about migration to this country by Russian Poles at the end of the 19thC - I suspect from his name that he may well have been Jewish, too.
I know next to nothing about the geography of Bristol, or indeed the history, maybe, of migrant Russian/Polish/Jewish people at that time.
Another clue is that on the 1911 Census form he signed his name as H.L.Hart.  Any help at all would be much appreciated!
Regards, Keith
P.S. Or indeed any death notices for perhaps a well liked local tailor called HART in 1934...?

Gosh, Lady Hawk,
That looks like a remarkably good fit, except for the fact that Louis should have been in his fifties by then.  But it certainly gives the flavour of the migration aspect, certainly in time of war, or of aggression and conflict, with the minority groups having continually to shift to somewhere else.
Thanks so much for trying to pull the rabbit out of the hat, though!
Keith
But, certainly, someone with an identical name to my individual, does almost certainly verify the Polish/Jewish origins which I suspect...

Ladyhawk,
This is most kind of you…the pieces are beginning to fit together quite well.  I too looked at that 1891 Census entry, but as there was a gap under Charles W.'s name, I didn't go to the next page to find Harry W.  In the 1911 Census they state that they have had five children, so I was wondering where the missing one was!
Are you also saying that there is another Louis and Fanny on that border crossing list?
And why is it you're wondering whether Louis's first name is Henry - is your question related to that entry?
And up to this point I couldn't find a likely marriage entry, (was looking between 1883 and 1885) but that 1889 one that you have unearthed
looks a real possibility.  Though if that is the case, then both Charles and Harry were already in the
world before then and might possibly have been Fanny's children from a previous marriage or relationship.  I do need to send away for that certificate now!
Many thanks for all this, it goes without saying…
Keith

Ladyhawk,
And by contrast, I've just popped out, and now I've popped back again to discover more of your excellent sleuthing! Very interesting, I wonder whether the long (3 years) delay in probate being granted had anything to do with her husband's origins - indeed, if it is he who dies in 1934, that probably complicated things further, and therefore Mr Blower comes into the equation...

Are you also saying that there is another Louis and Fanny on that border crossing list?

Looking at the form it looks as if the above Louis Hart born 1881 Poland occ is a Trav. Salesman
(Travel Salesman)

His dob matches that of the Louis Hart below but his a occ. wood carver :-\

Louis Hart born 1881 Poland Hebrew (Res) Russian occ wood carver his wife is also born Poland named Fanny born c1882 they are living in London

They are on 1930 /1940 US Census living in Bronx NY

Louis Hart  born Poland occ Wood Carver / Carpenter
Fannie Hart born Poland

There’s a possible marriage for this couple Mile End 1903
Lewis Hart name on same page Fanny Spielberg

And why is it you're wondering whether Louis's first name is Henry

The only reason I was wondering about whether his first name might be Henry was because of
Louis & Fanny naming there son Harry

And up to this point I couldn't find a likely marriage entry, (was looking between 1883 and 1885) but that 1889 one that you have unearthed looks a real possibility.

Though if that is the case, then both Charles and Harry were already in the world before then and might possibly have been Fanny's children from a previous marriage or relationship.

The marriage certificate would confirm if Fanny was widowed

If the birth entries from Gloucestershire BMD are correct for their daughters Kathleen Daisy & Violet Louisa then their mother Fanny's maiden name is WOOD
also forgot about their daughter Lily
1892 Stroud Lilian Gertrude mmn WOOD

A birth certificate for one of their children would confirm Fanny's maiden name
from the censuses the boys were born in Nottingham & the girls in Stroud Gloucestershire

Stroud birth entries (FreeBMD)
Jun 1892 Lilian Gertrude Hart vol 6a page 328
Jun 1894 Kathleen Daisy Hart vol 6a page 300
Mar 1897 Violet Louisa Hart vil 6a page 320

Not sure about the boys birth entries in Nottingham

Charles & Harry/Henry don't have a middle initial 1901/11 this might be Harry's marriage entry

Sep 1908 Bristol vol 6a page 376
Harry Lewis Hart name on same page Edith Maud Stokes
no maiden name for son Harry L (Leonard) born Bristol Jun 1911
mmn didn't start until Sep 1911 but there are these two entries
1914 Bristol Dennis G Hart mmn Stokes & 1915 Bristol Eileen M Hart mmn Stokes
