YOUNG family of Radstock
« on: Sunday 27 July 14 14:44 BST (UK) »
Hello. I am stuck with a problem with tbe Young family. My g.grandfather was Charles Young born 3rd April 1859 in Radstock, Somerset. He moved north to the Rotherham area. I have his marriage certificate which states his father is Benjamin (deceased).Charles was married on the 10th March 1883 in Radstock. I can find no record of Benjamin or who his wife was. Some researchers have found another Charles who seems to fit but not with the father being Benjamin. My other g.grandparent (Hannah Mary)was from the Milsom family. A well known name in the Somerset Coalfield area. I can trace this line quite a long way back. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi

Is the other Charles that you mentioned the one that was christened 3 Apr 1859 Radstock, middle name Henry, parents: William and Mary ?

It looks like this one died and was buried a year later on 22 Mar 1860 at St Nicholas, aged 1 year. Source: FreeREG.

So he could be ruled out, if this is correct.

Hi

I may have something. In the 1891 census Charles and Hannah have nephew Joseph Nash aged 16 bn Wales living with him. In 1881 he is with his parents Joseph and CHARLOTTE Nash. Charlotte states on census she was born in Malmesbury, Wiltshire c1848.

Charlotte YOUNG and Joseph Nash married Merthyr Tydfil 1868. So now we know Charles had a sibling Charlotte.

There are a couple of Charlotte Youngs in Wiltshire with father Benjamin in 1851 census, but can't pin them down in 1861 with your Charles.

Hi

There is this marriage

Benjamin YOUNG aged 55, father Samuel Young ~  married 14 Jan 1850 Easingwold Yorkshire.

Ann York aged 32, father Thomas York.

Think this is them in 1851 as lodgers in the Viner family in Westbury Wilts.

Benjamin Young lodger 57 occ. ??   bn Maiden Bradley Wilts.
Ann             "    wife    38 former weaver bn ??wold Yorks. ( looks a bit like Easingwold)
CHARLOTTE      dau     5                        bn Calne Wilts.
Sarah                 "       2                         "      "       "
Isaiah               son 7weeks                    " Marlbro. Wilts.

Class HO107,  Piece 1842,  Folio 386, Page 19.

Can't find any trace of the family in 1861, but in 1871 in CLUTTON Somerset (abt. 7 miles from Radstock) in the Union Workhouse, are these two

Ann YOUNG  widow aged 54  pauper bn. Unknown
Charles "      aged 11 pauper bn. Clutton Somerset.

Class RG10, Piece 2470,  Folio 72, Page 26.

Only possibles but maybe something to look at further

Thank you so much for your research. I really dont know which of these theories is correct. If only we had the 1861. I shall write everything down to see which scenario fits best with what we know of their later life. I also wish there was another living Young who is researching. They may know the truth of the matter through oral family history. Once again thank you so much.

Hi
The three children Charlotte and Sarah born Calne and Isaiah born Marlborough.

According to Wiltshire bmd,
Isaiah born Marlborough 1851. That fits. Mother's maiden name given as York.

Charlotte should be born 1845/6 and Sarah 1848/9, but looking for York as mother's maiden name, all there is registered is

Sarah 1846 Calne and
Charlotte 1848 Malmesbury West.

Also 1850 marriage in Easingwold.
Ann York to Benjamin Young

Think Isaiah may have died - there are two birth registrations. Benjamin and Ann's child and one b Westbury on Severn area. The latter is alive and well on later censuses, and then there is this

Isaiah Young
Burial 22 Dec 1852, Bristol, Holy Trinity, St Philip, Gloucestershire, England
Age    2
