Have you seen this 1841 entry:

William Grant 42 shoemaker
Margaret Grant 33
Alexr Grant 12
David Grant 5
George Grant 4

Address: Roads, Dunfermline Fife

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY86-DFJ Can only see this and George's birth.

This might the family in 1851:

William Grant 50 shoemaker b. Inverness
Margaret Grant 40 b. Edinburgh
George Grant 15 b. Dunfermline

Address: Nethergate No 85, Dundee

The problem with this is that David really only showed Knockando as his birth place (although his info is coming across as inconsistent!).

Monica

Additional information - Re: David Grant's mother:

1859 Marriage Record: Jane (Smith) Grant
1865 Marriage Record:  Mary (McKenzie) Grant

There are no marriage records that I could find for a David Grant and a Jane Smith, nor for David Grant and Mary McKenzie.

Thanks again for your assistance.

From what you have said:

William Grant, shoemaker, and Jane Smith - connected to 1859 marriage to Alexandrina McDonald
David Grant, cattle farmer, and Mary Mckenzie - connected to 1865 marriage to Jane McLeod.

What were the names of Alexandrina McDonald and Jane McLeod's parents?

What did did his death cert say?!

It is a puzzle for sure with the names etc. Could be either/or really  :-\

David's children's names in order from [first] marriage in 1859 - all with a big question mark at the end subject to any form of Scottin naming pattern:

William 1861 - David's father's name from his 1859 MC
Isabella 1863 - Alexandrina's mother's name from her 1859 MC
John 1865 ?
David 1867 - David's father's name from his 1865 MC
Hugh Mcleod 1869 - Jane's father's name from her 1865 MC
Jane 1871 - David's mother's name from the 1859 MC
Mary Ann 1873 - David and Jane's mothers' name from his 1865 MC
John 1874 ?

However...we do have first William and Isabella with father David in 1871, linking up clearly the two families.

Thanks again for your recent assistance.  The mystery remains unresolved, but the fun continues. it is interesting that the Scottish naming convention appears to have been followed for the first few children, with the exception of John. Perhaps, I should review possible Grant families with a John.

Cheers,

Grant
