1841 census look up please
« on: Monday 01 December 14 18:41 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone be kind enough to look up a family please on 1841 census Manchester. I have been trying to find the family for years & have posted on here previous but I now have more information.
Elizabeth Leech born around 1789 on 1851 census was living at 40 Tame Street Manchester. She was a widow but I think her husband James was still living in 1841. On 1851 census she was a widow living with her was son Joseph born 1827, Henry Leech son born 1834, Daniel Leech son born 1831, Mary Leech (married by 1851 name Berwick) born 1831, Sarah Leech (married by 1851 name Topping).

Many Thanks

Thank you so much for this information. Yes it is definately the family.  Is James age definately 25 or could it be 65? Elizabeths husband James would have been 65 in 1841 & he was a cotton spinner. I thought he was alive in 1841. Elizabeth daughter is down as 20 on 1841 census but also aged 20 on 1851 census??????? but Daniel is also down as 20 on 1851 census making them twins?????? I wonder who's son Henry aged 1 is????? Trouble is 1841 census doesn't give as much info as the following years & the people in those days did tell porky's with their age as I have found out on many census returns.
Many thanks

Dont forget that the ages in 1841 the age of persons over 15 was supposed to be rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5. So a person aged 19 would be listed as 15, a person aged 22 would be listed as age 20 etc.

James is definitely down as 25.

I wonder who's son Henry aged 1 is?

Is he the Henry Hewin 11 lodger with the family in 1851 or is that a different person.

The 21 year old Elizabeth in 1851 is the wife of Daniel down as daughter in law to Elizabeth 62.

You are so good. James is obviously Elizabeths son. Looks like James husband died before 1841. Yes Henry aged 1 is obviously Henry Hewin aged 11 in 1851. All the children Elizabeth had & she brought up another child, must look into that now as to who he was. I can now tell from the ages of the children around the time Elizabeth & James married, so thank you so much for all the info.
Kind Regards

If Henry, aged 7 in 1841, was Elizabeth and James's son then you know that he must still have been alive as late as 1833/1834.
