Bury St Edmunds St James cemetery?
« on: Thursday 13 November 14 02:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to do a cemetery search over there please? I am looking for the burial of Joseph Ellis. Died 1805 and it says he was buried 19 Nov 1805, Saint James Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England. Is there any way I can search online to see if any others are there also? How can I obtain a photo even of the grave/s? Thought maybe his wife Elizabeth might be with him, or some children??

Sorry for so many questions!  Hoping to find his parents too.......

Hope you can help

Janine

St James appears now to be the Anglican Catherdral, so have you considered contacting them?

Think these might just be monuments:

Added:
There is a link to a Joseph Ellis died 1805, buried in St Mary.

Hello Janine

Most of these records are probably in the Suffolk Records Office now you can search online to see what they have http://www.suffolkheritagedirect.org.uk/.  As you have no doubt found out Suffolk is poorly covered online but some of the Suffolk FHS transcripts are available on a pay to view basis through one of the more popular family history websites or you can by the transcripts in CD format direct from SFHS's online shop  http://www.suffolkfhs.co.uk/.

Joseph Ellis was buried 19 Nov 1805 at St James, Bury St Edmunds.  This would have been in the churchyard.
An Elizabeth Ellis is buried there also 13 July 1836 age 86 of Low Baxter Street.  (Unfortunately no note to suggest whether or not she was related to Joseph or a widow).

There are quite a few other Ellis' buried at St James and then from 1855 on quite a lot buried at Bury St Edmunds Cemetery.  The info above comes from the SFHSs Suffolk Burial Index.

Hope it is of help
K
