Parry & Jones Families Caernarfonshire, Wales
« on: Sunday 15 June 14 00:58 BST (UK) »
William Lewis Parry died in Queensland in 1926 aged 67, born ca 1858.
The death certificate states he was born in Llanddeiniolen, Caernarfonshire, Wales to parents Lewis Parry and Jane (unknown)
He married in Festiniog, Carnarvon, Wales  when he was 20, to Catherine Jones.
I can't seem to back track from William Lewis  Parry  or his wife's line, whose father's name was John Johns (taken from death certificate) There is no mothers name recorded.
The death certificate states Catherine was born in Lanygrisian (spelling?) in Carnarvon ca 1860

I would be eternally grateful for any assistance that can be provided.

Thanks in advance ....Jon

Catherine's home might be 'Tanygrisiau' . That's very close to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Some trees have Jane as Jane Jones (a guess?) born in Llanddeiniol but there is a marriage in 1852 at Bangor Cathedral between Lewis Parry and Jane Parry. This appears in the North Wales BMD index but not in others.

The censuses give Jane's birth as Llanddeiniolen (incorrect as Llanddeiniol in 1871), Caernarvonshire in 1832.

In 1851, there is a Jane Parry born Llanddeiniolen, Caernarvonshire in 1832, living in Bangor, daughter of Richard and Jane.

Assuming that the Bangor cathedral details are correct and relevant, one strong candidate seems to be a Jane Parry who is living in Pentir (though born Llanddeiniolen) in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses. Her parents are Richard Parry (B circa 1805, Nefyn, from a later census) and Catherine ? (b circa 1796 Llanbeblig, buried Llanddeiniolen 1864) . There is a younger sister, Mary (Later Mary Oliver, I believe) whose birthplace is stated to be Bethel, Llanddeiniolen in a later census as well. Pentir is roughly halfway between Llanddeiniolen and Llandegai, even though it is associated with Bangor parish. Bearing in mind that Lewis and Catherine Parry's eldest son was called Richard, this family seems worth considering.

Looking at FindMyPast, the Bangor Cathedral marriage Between Lewis Parry and Jane Parry does seem to be the right one, but Lewis (named as the son of William Parry) is named as Lewis Jones for some reason. This cannot have been a mistake, as both groom and bride signed their names.

Is it possible that Lewis was born out of wedlock and that his mothers last name was Jones??

Thanks to Huwcyn, I can now see the marriage details

Lewis Parry appears on the North Wales BMD index because he is listed twice, as Parry and Jones. The others only show him as Jones.

As Trish pointed out, there is a William Parry in Llandegai in 1841 with a wife, Anne. Lewis is aged 10.

The baptism for Lewis and two siblings show the mother as Elizabeth
Lewis - 22 Aug 1930
David - 19th May 1832
William - 25 Dec 1835
Anne (aged 5 months on the census) - 27 Dec 1940 has the mother as Ann - abode Clerk's House

On the 1851 census, the family is at St Ann's, Llandegai. The marriage has Lewis's abode as St Ann's, Llandegai.

It sounds as though William was married twice but he would seem to be the correct father.

There is a burial for an Elizabeth on 28th Dec 1836 aged 42 - abode Tynylon Toll House

The next baptism - Edward 6th March 1842 - has the abode as St Ann's and William as Quarryman and Clerk of St Ann's
