southampton look up's 1916/17
« on: Saturday 04 January 14 18:10 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out any information on an Alexander Allen and his wife Letitia {Armstrong} Adams and any family they may have had, they were born in Belfast.I believe Alexander was born about 1858.
he was bosun on the SS Taplow which sank in 1917 with all loss of life.I have seen a photo of the Merchantile Marine Monument in London. and read the small inscription about him.
I am wondering if there could be any other places in Southampton I could check out? Southampton was his last place of residence.
    Regards B/B

Per CWGC he was:

"Son of the late Robert and Mary Allen; husband of Letitia Allen (nee Armstrong), of 8, Northam St., Southampton. Born at Belfast."

There is a Northam Street in Southampton. There is also a Northam Road, and 8 Northam Road was for many years the home of an Ann Edith Allen born circa 1845 in Newport IoW. Just coincidence?

Yes it is just a coincidence. The 1916-17 street directory confirms Miss Allen at 8 Northam Road and Alexander Allen at 8 Northam Street.

This is a terrific resource for Southampton history http://www.plimsoll.org/StartHere/default.asp

You'll find Mrs Allen still at 8 Northam Street in the 1920 directory

They were married in Belfast in 1884.

There was at least one child - Alexander born Belfast in 1890, died in Vancouver in 1966 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FLYB-CVP

thank you so much shaun.we have a photo of the grave marker of Alexander buried here in Canada.the fellow we are researching is Alexander's father, also named Alexander he was the bosun on board the SS Taplow which went missing in 1917 and what became of Letitia we are looking for when she died and where,
We greatly appreciate all the help and the information you have provided,we were hoping that  somewhere in our researching of Alexander senior we might have come across a photo of him,I am sure there must still be some of his off spring still alive somewhere, and decided that Southampton would be a good place to start seeing that was his last known address.
we do know  that the grandson of the Alexander who is buried in Vancouver is alive and still lives in the Belfast area, and that he also is looking into this ongoing research.once again thank you.
