I'm looking for info on James Freeman, small holder living in Sway  1937. I believe that he was born 1881/82. I have found an entry in BDM of a Charles Freeman married to Ellen Emily Gates 1896 but I have his daughter marriage cert which definitely gives her father name as James. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. my search is mainly for the family of Samuel Gates 1855 married Ellen Gates?  Ellen died 1892. He then married Charlottie and had three children, georgie Winifred and Samuel.1911 Census. There is one child on the 1881 Census Florence Mary 1811 between Samuel and Ellen, I was looking for more children from this marriage. I'm also keen to purchase a book called Sway Snippets by R G Swan and I have heard of another book called 'They lived in Sway'. I have checked my usual sites on line but No luck. As I live in Western Australia I can't visit the local libraries. any help with finding  these books would be helpful

Yes Samuel Gates did marry Ellen Gates 1874 (FreeBMD).

1891 Census Ellens Brother Walter 1871 is with them;
Samuel/Ellen had Children;
Minnie 1884
Jane 1886
By 1901 Sam has married Charlotte CARL 1897 in Lymington (F/S.Org)

Birth Regs, Lymington for GATES;
FLORENCE MARY, Sept 1877
MINNIE EMILY, June 1884
JANE, Sept 1886

FreeBMD has a Marriage Dec 1896 for Florence Mary Gates to either George HAMMETT or James HOLES**

You havent answered who was James Freemans Daug? When/Where did she Marry (I presume it was 1937?)
I have found a James born c 1882 Sway but he is unm in 1901/1911

OK think I have it;

Marriage Reg, Dec 1913 Lymington, 2b 1443
James FREEMAN to Florence Mary HOLES

Death Reg for a James HOLES, age 37, Dec 1912, Southampton, 2c 47

Looks to me that Florence was Widowed 1912 and married James Freeman 1913

I never look at Trees until I have found info for myself.

A Tree has James FREEMAN Snr (Father of James 1882) marrying Eliza BRAN 11 June 1871
Familysearch confirms this and she was Widowed also and nee GATES, Father Charles.

Was it QUEENIE who married 1937? Birth Reg as Tiny on FreeBMD 1915, Mother Gates?

Hi Trish. Thanks for the info. I had found James Gates's three children - Reginald, Tiny and Joan. But was stuck on James and his father . I couldn't find James's birth record in Sway & I hadn't got as far as James Freeman (senior). You are correct in all the other details that you have mentioned.
Knowing now that James (senior) married Eliza Bran will help a lot.
