which genealogy site is now the best?
« on: Friday 04 April 14 14:22 BST (UK) »
is it just me or is anyone else struggling?

I have been a member of FindMyPast for more years than I care to admit to and always found it acceptable, only the occasional mis-transcription or niggle.
However since Tuesday when I got upgraded to the new format, I find my searches are oftern timing-out.  When and if you do get something, e.g. a census transcription - it is not as per the actual document but people in their choice of order, omitting occupations.

So to the cure, apart from ancestry (I use in the library) which other genealogy site would anyone recommend to replace my FindMyPast membership?

On your main question, I don't think any one site "replaces" another, as (leaving aside interface issues) the content varies so much. What suits you best will very much be determined by where your research interests lie, especially for pre-1837 dates, occupational/military records and any research outside England & Wales.

www.thegenealogist.co.uk (website address updated) is good..........depends what records you need access to really but you could look at their site to see if they would be useful to you  :)
Best wishes HL

Er, how can that happen? I checked my post to see the link worked and it opened to another site!!

Did I break a copyright reg or something?

Anyway, Google the genealogist and you'll get there   :)

But if anyone could tell me how that can possibly happen I'd be pleased to hear.
Best wishes HL

This is the correct link:

www.thegenealogist.co.uk

The URL you typed (omitting "the") has presumably been acquired by those other people and redirected towards their site. Commonly done to entice the unwary!

I subscribe to The Genealogist.  It's easy to use, but unfortunately doesn't have as much content as Ancestry and FindMyPast.  I've just read on FindMyPast.s Facebook page that someone has heard on the grapevine that another genealogy company is going to start a site that will knock spots off both the 2 well known ones.  Whether that's true or note I don't know and I can't think which genealogy company it would be.

That's interesting, Lizzie - unless they have been working on it for some time, I wouldn't think it will be up and running yet.

I also have The Genealogist, but don't find it as useful as FindMyPast or Ancestry. My favourite is still Ancestry as it has most of the records that I need, but as someone said, it really depends where your interests are.
