Where to find Galashiels inquest info, 1860
« on: Tuesday 19 June 12 09:40 BST (UK) »
I am hoping that our William Brown who died unexpectedly in Galashiels in December 1860 would have had an inquest and/or a newspaper mention.  In his Probate/Will document, July 1861 it says that he died 'at Galashiels on or about (then there is a gap) day of December'.  It reads as though he was discovered dead some days later; he would have been around 51 years of age.  His family lived in the Isle of Sky, see earlier post re gravestone.

The newspapers are either at the Hawick Hub or at Galashiels library.  You would have to get a local person to look a them or visit yourself.  But there would have been a report probably.  The Scotsman archives are online but cost money to search.  He may be in the Scotsman too if it was a sudden death.

Thanks Barbara, a visit to the library is not possible as I live in NZ.  Scotlandspeople have suggested trying the National Library of Scotland so that is possible from here.  It would be mavellous if a local person from Galashiels could find an article in a newspaper.

Thanks Steve and Imber,
I have asked the Galashiels library for newspaper information and I might need to ask at Inverness as William died without a will and Probate, or whatever it is called in Scotland, had to go through the Inverness Commissary Court.  I am thinking that they must have had some details re his death for the court to act on the matter.  Thanks for the interest.
