Hi there Jewly81
I am a little confused. Over on the Australia Board we are looking for the parents of your Henry Mortimer who was married in 1881 in Richmond New South Wales. I have posted on that thread with info as to how to research the NSW Church Registers to obtain the first hand information that that Henry provided to the clergy when he was arranging to be married. It definitely includes the details he provided about himself (his age, his place of birth, his occupation, his usual address) and about his parents (his father’s full names, occupation; his mother’s full names, including her maiden name).
The main reason I am confused is that without that information that Henry himself provided in 1881, how can you possibly go back with confidence to his ancestors?
Here is that thread, started only yesterday (New Years Day 2014, a NSW public holiday, so no opportunity for research in any of the recognised archive offices)

There is the 1860 death cert for a Richard MORTIMER, a Nurseryman, of George St, Parramatta. He was 90 years of age and the informant did not know the names of either of his father or his mother. The informant was his son in law. That Richard Mortimer was shown on his dc as born in Bath, Somersetshire, England, and he was known to have been in NSW for 69 years. The dc also shows that he was twice married, firstly in 1810 to Catherine, and then secondly to Mary O’Donnell. Both these marriages were in NSW …. To Catherine at Parramatta and to Mary at Hamilton. His son in law stated that Richard had 2 living sons and 2 living daughters alive and 2 (gender not noted) deceased. This chap was buried 7 June, St Johns Cemetery, Parramatta. The Rev R L King, C of E officiated. #5189 NSW BDM.
May I gently note that the above death is NOT for the Richard Mortimer whose death was registered at Richmond NSW in 1860. That chap’s dc is referenced #5787. The NSW BDM online index has that chap’s parents with given names of George and Elizabeth.
I have typed up the details of the dc for the chap who was born Bath, so that others reading this thread can appreciate the depth of details available on NSW death certs.
May I please suggest to Jewly that she considers obtaining an official transcription of the 1860 death for Richard, for the chap whose death was registered at Richmond NSW. It should give the details of his marriage/s, no. of living sons, no. of living daughters, no of deceased, etc etc etc. It may give Jewly some clues as to if he had a son named HENRY. Of course, Henry's own 1881 marriage details would likely be a more reliable source for information about Henry's parents.
