the Roscommon volunteers
« on: Thursday 27 May 10 07:09 BST (UK) »
I've just read of a book published with the above title.  It is about men from the County Roscommon in Ireland who fought in the "Troubles", the fight for Irish Independence in and around 1913-1916.

I believe my father Hugh Giblin and uncle Patrick Giblin were members of this group of Old IRA fighters.

Would like to confirm that.

thanks for any info, would really appreciate it,

Hugh Giblin

Hello!
I believe that we are related. My great grandfather was Francis Giblin, the elder brother of Hugh and Pat, also born in Roscommon.
I'm off to Ireland next week and will hopefully be visiting Athlone which is where Hugh and Pat were imprisoned in 1922.
It would be really great to discuss this, so please do get in touch. My email is: (*)

Thanks!

Helen

Hi,

My name is Fergal Hegarty and I live in Athlone town, Ireland. I came across this post and have some information that might be of interest. When I bought my house twenty years ago I found two old handmade Christmas cards, signed by a "Patr Giblin" dated 1922, the message inside was "from a prisoner of war in Athlone". The card was addressed to a "Kathleen Kellegher".  I believe this might be who you believe to be your uncle Partick.

If you want anymore information, you can email me at  (*)

Thanks.

Hi Fergal,
Thank you so much for getting in touch - that does sound very much like my great great uncle Patrick. Can I ask, do you still have these Christmas cards? Last week I met up with Patrick's nephew, who lives in America now, but was visiting the UK. He'll be very interested to hear about this.
By the way, is your email gmail dot com at the end?
Mine is (*)

Thanks again,
Helen

may I recommend you purchase 'They Put the Flag-a-flyin' by Kathleen Hegarty Thorne. Picking up my copy it has mention of both Hugh and Patrick Gilblin.
I am sorry but my emails are no longer working.
