I live in Clee St. Margaret, Shropshire in the Clee Hills and according to the online Doomsday Book entry 'Cleie' is Old English for 'on a Hill'. The old locals around here don't say 'the Clee Hills' they say 'the Clees'.

Strangely, old Directories always say Clee St. Margaret gets it's name from the Pye Brook!? I seem to remember another reference somewhere which means 'FROM the hills' and our Pye Brook is certainly that!

Regards,
Lyn
