1851/61/71 census Eaglesham James Young
« on: Monday 04 June 07 16:03 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the family of my great grandmother, Elizabeth Young, who was born Apr 30, 1856 at Blackwood farm, Eaglesham.

I have found her family, I think, in 1841 in Stewarton, Ayrshire, but would like to find the census records before & after Elizabeth's birth.

parents: James Young (b. abt. 1812) & Janet Cochrane (b abt 1817)

Could someone with access to the 1851 & 1861 & 1871 census records please look them up for me?

Thank you so much, Monica.

It fills in the picture. And adds more mysteries. Why were the first children called Cochran in 1851? The parents were married in 1839. Perhaps it was a census takers error. John definitely calls himself Young on his mother's death record.

Now I have to figure out why her father who is listed  as a cabinetmaker on every census record and on his death certificate, listed himself as a shepherd on her birth certificate. His father was a farmer, so maybe I need to pursue that angle.

I would also like to know why they moved around so much.

Both parents died at Yardfoot, Lochwinnoch him in 1879 and her in 1882, but I don't know where they were between 1861 & their deaths.

Hi Sharon

I have family from the same areas. Like yours they were farm workers and domestic servants and like yours they moved around a lot - curiously in the same areas around the same time.

In our case was basically they went where they could get work. Perhaps same applies to your folks.

Just a thought  ;)

Check carefully though. Young was a fairly common name in Eaglesham and over the Ayrshire border into Fenwick. Cochrane is also a local name. Unfortunately I don't seem to have census entries for that bit of Eaglesham in 1851. Blackwood is an obsolete farm name on the modern farm of Greenfield, much of which land has recently been redeveloped as a windfarm. It lies on a road from East Kilbride south-west through Eaglesham to Kingswell and thence to Kilmarnock. The farmland was partly flooded by a reservoir in the 1830s, known as Dunwan Dam, which might explain the loss of the entry post 1841, as the farms were gradually amalgamated. The site is a ruin 300 metres south-east of Greenfield between two streams flowing into Dunwan Dam at NS 543493, two miles SW of Eaglesham village.

That looks like a family that could fit mine.
Thanks Joe.
I will look into it further.

Just beginning my journey! Starting with trying to find Elizabeth Young , my great g/mother b. 1892?, married James McLachlan. From chat on here found they married 1912. Want to try and trace family on Eliz side. Might be tricky with all the Youngs in area!
