Jute circa 1958

I visited a Jute mill with my primary school around 1957-9 it must have been one of the last still in production.  The noise if the looms was absolutely deafening and the girls used to lip read.

Can anyone advise where or which mill was this likely to be?

There were several jute mills still operating in Scotland well into the 1960s - quite a few in the Dundee area.  I don't think it will be possible to identify the mill you visited but you could try postin g a message on the BBC Scotland On Film forum:

I recall visiting (a) jute mill(s) in Forfar in the 1950s. We were doing what I suppose would be a project these days - finding out about what manufacturing industries there were in Forfar.

The OU have a free open learning unit on Dundee, jute and empire.  While you really do need to buy the recommended text if you want to fully complete the unit there is plenty of interest in the content provided.

My grannie was a Dundee weaver and I can still remember playing as a child with old pirns from the mills.
