Helen Lindsay m David Mitchell Stewart 1910 Dun Angus
« on: Wednesday 13 August 14 23:31 BST (UK) »
I'd like to confirm or rule out the above David Mitchell Stewart as the same David Mitchell Stewart (born 1888) who is commemorated on the War Memorial (death 1918) in Thornhill Perthshire.

This is the only marriage listed in scotlandspeople for a David Mitchell Stewart for the relevant time frame.

If anyone is related or knows the history of the above couple I'd be grateful for any information, thank you.

His parents (if it's the same David) were indeed David Stewart and Elizabeth Sinclair, sadly there does not appear to be a CWGC entry for him, so many were never found.  :-\  The Thornhill War Memorial lists as follows:

To the Glory of
God
and in Memory
of the Men of
The Parish of
Norrieston
who Gave
Their Lives in
The Great War
1914 - 1918
Cameron William M
Cherrie John
Dick James
Duncanston Peter
Galbraith James
Hamilton R Milton
Jenkins David
Moir William
Montgomery John S
Morrison James
McCowan Duncan
McDougall John
McLachlan John
McMillan Donald M
Renton David
Scott Robert M
Sinclair Peter
Stewart Charles S Charles Sinclair Stewart ie David's younger brother
Stewart David M David Mitchell Stewart
Stewart Michael
1939 - 1945
Anderson William
Cowan Alexander
Hutchison Andrew
Mailer Peter
also
McGregor Wallace killed in Palestine 1948

I have a fair bit of detail on his brother Charles but don't want to post on the WW1 thread until I have all the details of both sons.  It's likely that Peter Sinclair is also related and possibly Michael Stewart too.

Same place in 1901 too but listed as David Stewart (missing the middle M out)

Hi

Sorry Fifer47 but I don't understand what you are saying about the CWGC here. Could you clarify?

There are 3 pages of David Stewart's on the CWGC site (some on pages which list large numbers of "unknown" British soldiers) but none that I can see which I can directly relate to David Mitchell Stewart of Thornhill. The only place he does appear with certainty is the Thornhill War Memorial.

OK, thanks. I think I see what you are saying. Even if he was in a grave of an unknown soldier he would still be listed on the website. It's a real problem where the surname is common and there are no next of kin etc details.

As their younger son Charles (19) *is* listed as son of David and Elizabeth of Thornhill it made me think he'd left home or married (as NOK would be a wife), and joined up elsewhere.  With no idea of regiment etc I was checking all other angles.
