Captain William Grieve - Arbroath
« on: Saturday 15 November 14 09:04 GMT (UK) »
Trying to clarify and add to information I have about a Capt. William Grieve from Arbroath and his family. Information so far is he was born 1831. In the 1841 Census he is listed with parents William (also a merchant seaman), mother Jean and siblings Agnes and David. In 1856 he married Margaret Dick in Arbroath. They had four children that I know of... Jane Ann Grieve who married Alex Patterson (plasterer) and emigrated to Boston (I have information about this family); Margaret (may have died aged 19); William (think he died at age 16) and Agnes (M?) Grieve who first married John Edwards (died age 34) and then Caithness Talbert.
Any help regarding Captain Grieve, his parents or siblings Agnes (b1829) and David (b1833) much appreciated. He died in 1901.
Edwards, Grieve, Talbert in Angus and Kincardineshire; Allan, Dundas, Hacket, Milne, Reid in Aberdeen and Orkney; Brock in Thurso and Aberdeen; Rennie in Aberdeenshire to name but a few...

Sadly , this child may have died before the 1841 Census -

Possible death for William Grieve 1882 St Mary(Dundee) Angus , born c1801.(SP)

That may match - William Grieve , death 23rd Feb. 1882 , burial 27th Feb. 1882 Arbroath Abbey(Angus)(Deceased Online].

Both William and his wife Jane Miller should be on the 1881 Census.

ev - Thanks very much for these. I have quite a bit of checking to do! It's made more difficult by generations having the same name... I have three generations of William Grieves - and also being a fairly common name around those parts. Nevertheless... every little piece of the jigsaw is welcome. Thanks once again - I'll keep at it.
