St James Altham, Lancs - Grave Lookup
« on: Saturday 02 August 14 13:27 BST (UK) »
Hello - Long Shot I know
I am looking for help with the Inscription on the "Family Vault" for Sarah  and Reverend John Wotton Pengelly buried at St James Altham Lancs

Sarah was buried 10th March 1882,John was buried 10th March 1898
The Rev John Wotton had conducted some burials at St James but was mostly based in Blackburn.

Why they should be buried in Altham is a mystery ,her family (Couperthwaite) were all buried in Dalton -in -Furness and he was from Devon and apart from Officiating there a couple of times can see no link with Altham

Apparently the Lancs Family History did a survey on St James Altham inscriptions but it is not online ,does anybody have access to that

Thanks for reading

Paul

If you don't get an answer here, try the Accringtonweb. They are very helpful. As far as I know, there is only one copy of the M.I.s and it is at a local library, but not Accrington, maybe Colne or Burnley? claytonbradley

You may already have this info so don't know if it will help, but Lancashire OPC has some grave numberes in its burial register (not MI) transcriptions for Altham St James.
Sarah Pengelly in grave 30/41 NG, buried March 10 1882.

Ann Tattersall in grave 30/41 NG, buried 5 Jan 1882 Wife of James Tattersall
Died: 2 Jan 1882, Age: 70 yrs, Abode: Accrington

James Tattersall in grave 30/41 NG, buried 8 Jul 1882
Died: 5 Jul 1882, Age: 77 yrs, abode: Accrington

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

There are no grave numbers for the burials in 1898 but presumably John Wotton is in the same one.
Are the Pengellys related to the Tattersalls in some way?

Copies of the MI`s can be found in Burnley and Colne libraries.  I will be going to Burnley library next week so I will get the details for you.  My Gt Gt Grandmother was also buried at St. James, Altham and I still haven`t a clue as to why, apart from it being a lovely church and location at the time. Oddly enough she was from Devon too.

Mo

Hi,

Sadly the transcribed MIs are not at Burnley - baptisms, marriages and the  burial registers are.   If they were done by Lancashire FHHS then I would imagine they will now be held at their premises in Oswaldtwistle.

Mo

Just in case you haven't seen it -- there is a death notice in the Blackburn Standard of 12th March 1898 for Rev John Wotton Pengelly.

Apparantly he died in Gloucestershire and was brought to St Michael's in Blackburn before being buried in Altham!

(St Michael's is where my mum and dad were married -- and was my local church as a child).

The newspaper article confirms that his wife was already buried at Altham -- but as John had been vicar of St Michael's for many years -- it does beg the question as to why SHE had been buried there. He was then buried with his wife -- but maybe any family connection with that area was his wife's.

LOCAL INTELLIGENCE .  ( Edited)
The Blackburn StandardSaturday, March 11, 1882;

The household of Rev J W Pengelly vicar of St Michaels was plunged into grief by the death of Mrs Pengelly.  She was the youngest daughter of the late vicar of Dalton in Furness the Rev Mr Coupertwaite who  when she married Mr Pengelly was the vicar of St Michaels Church.
They had resided in Blackburn for 36 years and for a number of years she was a teacher in the school.
About nine years ago she had a severe attack of bronchitis and has been to weak for physical exercise sine that time. Five weeks ago she took to her bed and after a lingering illness she expired at 7.15 on Monday night   The remains were interred at Altham on Friday.
