Well Marion Imp Paris started date coding their cards in 1880 & this doesn't have one so it's before that or old stock.

The reason I asked as to the child's name, was to verify that this was indeed May Jones, and not a male child. I had checked the BMD records for a child's death circa 1880 and found nothing for Hull or Witham, or indeed Yorkshire, East Riding. This leads me to believe, the child was alive when the photograph was taken.

Regards

Malky

Thanks Jim...and yes Malky...I came to the same conclusion for the same reasons as you. The nearest I got was in Prescot, Lancashire...b. 1878 d. 1880
Thanks for your interest.

As there's no birth 1878/79 in the area either indicates to me the name's wrong.

We can't be sure that the child was born in Hull though can we Jim. Also May could have been her middle name.

I'm thinking PM ...  legs crossed - do babies that age cross their legs ?!

Eyes look propped open and the right arm down like that ... just my opinion !!!!

Although the child looks healthy, could we be looking here at a baby made passive and therefore amenable to being posed by some form of illness or disease?  If this IS a PM photo, would more trouble not have been taken with the child's hair?  His hair appears ruffled and untidy.

My feeling is that this is a living subject -- despite the unlikely pose.  But this is not an easy one.

Thanks for your thoughts Brit and CelticAnnie.....I guess we will never know for sure. There's no denying that the pose isn't normal and the name suggests a girl but Jim thinks it's a boy.....I have to say it does look more like a boy than a girl.

I wonder if the baby has just woken up and that could be why they look so relaxed. Take Care Lynette
