Hi,

I am new to the world of developing our family tree.  My father has done a lot of work but sort of gave up about 10 years ago.  I noted your enquiry regarding the Bristow's.  We may have some information in common or of use as I also note you are intersted in Cook's.  One of my forebares daughters married a Cook but I do not have any information.

Going back past my granfather the Bristow line goes:

Arthur George (b@1868 d@1917) m Lillias Gray
George Ledgard Bristow ( b @ 1827 d@1901) m Mary Fisher
John Bristow (b@1787 d@1840) m ? Ledgard
John Bristow ( b/d?) m ?Sarah Pool @ 1785.

Looking to trace this back

Hi there,

Do you have any info on Jean/Jane Cromartie Thomson born in Orkney (1810) who married a Peter Gibson (not known where he was born but c1812). - her parents were Magnus Thomson & Jean Cromartie Sutherland. His parents were Daniel Gibson & Mary Unknown.

kind regards,
Lorna.

Hi,

If it's of any interest I'm related to and (as a child and nascent teenager) remember Hugh and Cissie Gibson who were in Bigland in the 1960s and 1970s and Hugh's brother Stanley.

Hugh and Stanley were both born at Bigland.

Given time I'll be able to dig out some photos of Hugh and Cissie and Stanley and Alice.

If you're not already familiar with it Robert Marwick's Rousay Roots site is a great source of information on Rousay families - http://www.rousayroots.com

Hugh and Stanley's father Alan is on this page http://www.rousayroots.com/a271.html

You'll have read "The Little General & the Rousay Crofters" by William Thomson.
General Traill Burroughs, a hero of the Indian Mutiny, was less well received by his Rousay tenants apparently.

Skoosh.

Indeed. Gunboat sent to quash rebellious crofters on small Orkney island! It was an interesting time.

In fact over the years I think I've probably read every book that's ever been published about Rousay :-[
