I'm interested in any information about your Mary Anne BLAIR. Did you ever get the full details for her marriage?

My ancestor Margaret BLAIR was married in Tempo Church in 1862. Her father's name was John. The name EMERSON pops up as a middle name in her descendants so there's a good chance I also have that name in my direct line somewhere.

A John Emerson married Mary Anne Blair on 3rd June 1862  at Derrylin Church of Ireland in the Parish of Kinawley Civil District Lisnaskea County Fermanagh

Thanks,

I think Kinawley's probably a bit far from my area for her to have been Margaret's sister. My Blair line seems to have been around the Clogher/Enniskillen border.

Greetings Paddy

I also have EMERSONs from Tempo, FER on my family tree.

Eliza EMERSON b. abt 1844 in Tempo was my Great Grandmother. She died in 1884 in Ayr St, Auckland, NZ. She had emigrated first to Australia marrying my Great Grandfather William Henry LEONARD in Sydney 9 June 1868. The couple moved to NZ the same year.

Eliza's parents were Francis EMERSON and Susan CURRY. I have no further information on them.

I have 2 siblings recorded for Eliza.

William EMERSON b. abt 1836 at Enniskillen, FER. He married Eliza COULTER in 1864 in Sydney, AUS. I have details of 7 children some of whom ended up in Randwick Asylum because of the insolvency of the parents.

Susan EMERSON was born abt. 1841 in Enniskillen, FER. She married Christopher EGAN in Sydney 17 Sept. 1869. I have details of 4 kids. They also ended up on hard times.

I'm not sure if we can make any links out of all of this.

Regards

Keith

Hi Keith,

|   |   Mary-Jane EMERSON (4 Jan 1864 - 17 Aug 1920) & Edward CARTWRIGHT* (1852 - 11 Sep 1937)
|   |   Elizabeth EMERSON (26 Jan 1866 - 25 Jan 1938) & William Millar PATRICK (6 Feb 1864 - 30 May 1949)

I hope this may be of some help.  If any of these names appear in any of your findings in the future, please let me know.

Coulter's and Graham of Tempo.

I have extensive details on the Coulters arriving in Australia through Edward around 1858 on the Escort. Edward was married to Jane Graham, certainly within Enniskillen, but most likely from the village of Breandrum. Jane also had a nephew "William Graham" in Australia as well and I suspect that an entire family of Grahams came out to Aus.

The parents of Jane are, I think Isabella and William Graham.

Go and google trove, all BDM details and more are there

Regards

Hello Keith,
I see you are descended from Eliza Emerson, daughter of Francis Emerson and Susan (Susannah?) Curry.  I am descended from her brother William.  My grandmother remembered her grandfather William had a sister Helen who lived in NSW.
William married Eliza Coulter in Sydney 1864 and they had 7 children. Three of the girls aged 7, 9, and 10 were placed in Randwick Children’s Asylum in 1880, not because the parents were insolvent, but because Eliza died in June 1880. A man would not be able to care for so many  young children while working the long hours men worked in those days.. He paid 7/6 a week to their keep, which was probably a fair part of a man’s wage at that time. The eldest son Frank, from whom I descend, found work with a place to sleep in  a loft and cared for himself from the age of 15, while the younger brothers stayed with their father. I don’t know what became of the youngest girl Sarah Ann who was only 4 when Eliza died. She may have gone to her aunt Helen
William lived with Frank and his wife in his old age, and the brothers and sisters stayed in contact into old age. My grandmother said William was a lay preacher in the Methodist Church and very strictly against drinking, gambling, and dancing!
I don’t have the records of Francis Emerson and Susannah Curry, but Williams’s marriage certificate shows their names, and also that William was a storekeeper from Patterson NSW and his father Francis a farmer in 1864. Eliza Coulter, born in Enniskillen Co.Fermanagh, arrived 3/3/1859 in Sydney alone at the age of 21. Records show her parents David and Jane were dead but she had a cousin in the colony in Kent Street Sydney.
Hope some of this may be helpful.
Regards
Kathryn

Hi Kathryn,
I really appreciated the information about William Emerson.  I am descended from his daughter Margaret, and the information you provided backs up what we know of her difficult childhood.  She went into service at an early age.  Later she married Walter Patrick and had 5 children.
I would love to have further information about your Emerson family connection.
Thanks!
Lois
