Title: Roots Chat Meet Dublin 2007 Friday - Sunday
Post by: Christopher on Saturday 15 April 06 17:43 BST (UK)
Steady progress is being made with the organization of this event. It has been decided that June, July or August are the most suitable months as schools will be on holiday which will enable children to accompany their parents to this event. You are all welcome to blame me if this event proves not to be a really great one. :D

Hi Chris,

It is not your job to make this a wonderful event.  It will be up to each and every one of us who attends to make it a great event.  I think we will get out of the event as much as we put in.  There is no reason at all for this event not ending up as THE EVENt of 2007 for all Irish Genealogists.

Mary.

Hiya Mary,

Thanks for the support there. There is still a lot of work to be done. The word needs to be spread further amongst the Rootschat members. I agree it is up to each and every one of us who attend ... we are still somewhat short of each and every ones of us..I have just noticed a message come in saying 30,000 Rootschatters...anyone seen them anywhere ??? Are they hiding in Tyrone among the bushes ??? the Sloblands of Wexford ??? The Orchard County of County Armagh ??? the Lowlands of the Ards Peninsula ??? The Ring of Kerry ??? somewhere up Macgillicuddy's Reeks ??? they must be somewhere and there must be some more Irish people amongst that 30,000 too. Any suggestions as to how we go about finding them ???

I do not understand the voting system. Could someone explain it please or should I keep my mouth firmly closed ??? I voted once and the poll registered 4, someone else voted and it only registered 1 .I promise I was not cheating :D

All the Best, Chris

Hi Chris,

I would imaging quite a lot of the 30.000 are NOT in Ireland.  I'm sure if you do get this up and running there might be some people willing to come from abroad.  However we do neeed to find out who, in Ireland, would be interested.

Hi Chris,

My Canadian friend who lives here in Ireland is not interested in Genealogy.  My American friend who still lives in the USA is quite interested in Genealogy but I think she's coming over for a visit this year.  However I've met a lady on this site who I think could be persuaded to come.

City Hall in the afternoon from approximately 2.00 - 3.00 then a quick visit to the Ulster Museum.

Hi Chris,

I'd be interested in coming over in 2007- from Shropshire. Might bring husband and two recalcitrant children. Might go it alone though as husband is too interested in Guinness and may not be able to keep the kids amused!

Hiya Happy Easter Tracey,

Great to hear from you. Cead Mille Failte. One hundred thousand Welcomes. Welcome to the Irish thread on the Lighter Side. May we put you down for a provisional group of four at the moment ??? Sure now there are all sorts of exciting things to do in Dublin. Your kids will have a whale of a time and when they go back fo school for the new term they will have a lot to tell their mates about the quare time they had in the land of Saints and Scholars.

We look forward to seeing you all next year.

Hi Chris,

The logistics of trying to organise a one day meet in Dublin before the summer would be a nightmare.  However there is no reason at all why some of us could not get together occasionally.

Getting a few fellow Genealogists together would be as easy as making a date for a meal or whatever.

Mary.

Hiya Mary ,

I know there are a few fellow genealogists in the Belfast and Co. Down area.
I have not a clue how many there are in the Dublin area. It is disgraceful. The City is almost the size of the north of Ireland. The only Dublin member appears to be Mo (Moscan). I don't believe it. A population in the region of 1.300,000 and only one person searching for their ancestors. If Rootschaters stated their location we might find a few more. Why are so many not stating their locations ??? Their ancestors may have been convicts..surely they are not convicts too :D

I got quite carried away there for a minute. I nearly signed with an X imagining I was an illiterate nineteenth Irish peasant. :D

Hi Chris,

I sure agree with you that there should surely be plenty of people searching.  Might it be possible that they are beginners and as such are a bit intimidated???

So all you Irish Rootschatters come on....crawl out of the woodwork and if you are unsure we'll all hold out the hand of friendship and try to help you in any way we can.  Just remember we were all rookies once and the only way any of us have learned was by ploughing through records and asking....even begging sometimes, for help.

This meet in 2007 could be a really good get together but it will need to be well planned as otherwise Chris will not know what size venue we'll need.

I hope this will motivate you all to at the very least show yourselves.

Mary.

Lets see if we can interest at least 20 more people before the end of this month.

Hiya Chrissy,

It is a bit early to give this advice. I hope people realise this event in Dublin takes place at least thirteen months hence. We have a choice of June, July or August. I wonder if June or July might be better. Ireland's leading equestrian and social event of the year ... The Dublin Horse Show..takes place in August and it may be more difficult to get accommodation at that time of the year unless you book early.  People attending the Horse Show probably book twelve months in advance.

Best Wishes, Chris

Hiya Folks,

It may be too early to look at the fine details but we need to give them some consideration. Gerry (gmack) has kindly offered to lend a hand but the question is what should we be doing at this stage. Here is the PM received from Gerry.

Hi again,

I would be very interested in attending.

What stage are you at? I have never been involved in anything like this before,
but I could  lend a hand. I have some experience with websites etc.

My own family website is http://www.sordmaster.com/phpmyfamily-1.4.1

Regards

Now here are some of the problems involved in the organisation end of things -
So far there are 40 or 50 people coming but there will probably be a lot more so we need to have time tables and things like that It will be a three day event and people will be making their own accommodation arrangements so that is not the problem. The problem is places where a reasonably large group of people can meet for a meal. You cannot walk off the street into a restaurant and say "There are 50 or 100 of us we would like a meal now please". These type of things have to be organised in advance. Similarly a room where where we can socialise in the evening and maybe have a dance and drink. Remember it is a three day event we are considering.

The same problem arises with a hall where we can listen to a speaker or possibly have discussion groups. At the moment there are 50 so lets say we tell some one we need a hall for 50 then in a couple of months the number rises to over 100 Will the person with the hall for 50 be able to accommodate 100 instead of 50? Then we will have to charge something to cover overheads.

I think it is better doing the organising of the Dublin event on the board rather than by sending private messages. Lets hope we have an extremely successful event .. then people in other areas will be able to refer to this board if they wish to organise an event on a similar scale.

Best Wishes, Chris

Does Dublin University still let their rooms out and if so do they have catering on site and can they let their lecture rooms out.  Just a thought
Title: Re: Roots Chat Meet Dublin 2007 Friday - Sunday
Post by: Christopher on Tuesday 16 May 06 13:59 BST (UK)
Thanks Pat, that is a great thought.

They would probably have little problem if we ask provisionally for a room for 50 people and go back a few months hence and ask for a larger room. When you say Dublin University I assume you mean TCD ...
or do you mean UCD?

All the Best, Chris
Title: Re: Roots Chat Meet Dublin 2007 Friday - Sunday
Post by: pat01 on Tuesday 16 May 06 14:14 BST (UK)
I meant UCD.  If you don't ask you don't get anywhere.  You don't have to commit but it might give you an option.  I think that they use to rent out the bedrooms to the tourists during holiday time.  People can book their own rooms if they want to stay there and if we have the option for a lecture room and canteen or whatever it is all under one roof.

Hiya Pat,

It looks as though we may be able to get group rates at UCD.

http://www.ucdvillage.ie/home/index.php

http://www.trav.com/wri/property.php?HostelNumber=114

We may as well look at accommodation offered by TCD too.

http://www.uniquevenues.com/news.cfm?action=press_detail&press_id=25

If we consider Belfast as a venue in years to come it is worth noting that Queens Elms Village,
Stranmillis College and the University of Ulster at Jordanstown offer Summer accommodation for tourists.

Hi Chris,

I just had a look at the accomodation at UCD and Trinity and UCD accomodation is just over half what Trinity charge.  So I guess UCD would be the better choice and as the campus appears to be like a village I think it would meet every possible need.

Hiya Folks,

The last post here was a couple of weeks ago. I have just spotted an attraction that may appeal to some members whilst they are in Dublin. Park your cars somewhere safe, use the Dart or a bus to the City centre
and go on the 1916 Historical Walking Tour of Dublin. This is a good opportunity to learn about the events surrounding the Easter Rising. http://www.1916rising.com

Looking forward to seeing as many members as possible at the Dublin Rootschat Meet.

Update. I hope an "edit" rather than a post is acceptable. One more member Schmidt is on the list.
I have just received a message from a young Dublin based professional historian / genealogical researcher,
Aoife McGonigal, who is prepared to give us a short talk on her research at an estate in Co. Monaghan. http://www.proni.gov.uk/records/private/annarig.htm

Hi Christopher !

I've just come across this topic, and what a smashing idea !

Altough I've been to Ireland a few times on the old ancestor trail, (my Dunns were from Swinford, Co.Mayo and my McNultys probably also), exploring Dublin is something I've always wanted to do.   However, summer 1997 seems such a long way off   :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\.   I'm an impatient Saggitarius you see, and we're not very good at waiting for things :-\ :-\ :-\

Just the same, I know what you mean about planning in advance.  We once booked a flight for a few days stay in Dublin, only to find that the US country singer, Garth Brookes, (who we'd never heard of  ??? ???) was performing there, and we couldn't get accommodation for love nor money.  Anyway, it wasn't a problem, we just hired a car and toured along the South East coast instead, and it was just great ;D ;D ;D.

Anyway, you can put my name down, I'm definitely interested in being shown around Dublin by a native Irishman.

 ;) ;) ;)

Your name is on the list. I hope many others do the same thing as you and ask for their names to be added as soon as they spot this thread. Here is one of the places we might visit whilst in Dublin. I'm sure, like myself many of you would like at least one pint of good Guinness whilst listening to some traditional Irish music. I'll do my best to have a look at the place beforehand and report back. http://www.odonoghues.ie/index.htm

Put me down as a provisional. Came to Dublin in January for one night and what a night.  It was that good I missed my flight home and had to pay extra to get on a later flight.

The dates neen organising fairly quickly as Ryan Air run a pricing scheme that gets dearer as the flights fill.  I just looked at their website and as yet they don't go into 2007 but they will come Oct I think.

For those in the North of England in particualr Yorkshire you may consider using Doncaster Sheffield Airport.  This is the newest International airport in the country and probably the nicest I have ever been in.   For those who have families who would not want to come the airport offers great viweing for those not tyravelling over the ramp and Ryan Air always park on Stand 5 or 6 so they could watch you board the plane.

My only gripe with Dublin is the expense.  But the scenery, the people and the whole way of life is something you have to experience

Hiya Rob,

Thanks for your message. I added your name to the list. That was thoughtful giving details of the Doncaster Sheffield Airport Rob. I hope others follow your example and post details about the way they will be travelling to Ireland. If you have been to Ireland before folks please post as any information you can give will be extremely useful to those coming for the first time.

I altered my signature on my profile so that it advertises the RootsChat meet in Belfast and the one in Dublin next year. If people coming to this event or people who are supporting the event do not have signatures on their profiles at the moment would they consider advertising these events in this manner please. I think it is OK as we are advertising RootsChat events. There may be a banner at a later stage but at this stage every little helps.

Thanks to everyone planning to come and those who are giving the matter consideration but have not yet made up their minds. There is still plenty of time to have your names added to the list.

All the Best, Chris

Okay, here goes then Christopher. In the North West, of course, there's good old Manchester International Aiport - see the link below

http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester/content/panoramas/airport_roof_places_360.shtml

and if I remember correctly,  a return ticket to Dublin from Manchester costs about £25, which is very reasonable.

One of the places I personally would love to visit in Dublin is either the Royal Court Theatre or the Abbey Theatre - anyone else interested ??

I'm thinking of doing a two year part time post graduate course on the Social History of Belfast.
The course does include a section on genealogy. I'm not a graduate so I hope mature students

crowd of RootsChatters in the city next year.  Click here  (http://www.dublinuncovered.net/theatres.html) for a list of Dublin theatres.

Thanks for that Christopher but as I said I was born and have lived in Dublin all my life until last year when I moved to Kildare, so I am very familiar with all of her Theatres and indeed would have had many a good night in every single one of them !! good website for those travelling over for your get together though  :o :-

I've just noticed that the  Aras an Uachtarain ... the President's House  (http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Ireland/County_Dublin/Dublin-296021/Things_To_Do-Dublin-Phoenix_Park-BR-1.htm) is open between 10.30am to 16.30pm on Saturdays in the Summer. Booking is not possible .. just turn up for the tour. I think we should pencil this in as one of the events for the Saturday of the Dublin Meet. At the moment June is the hot favourite for this event.
There'll be another poll later in the year to decide which weekend would be the most popular one for the Dublin Meet. Now I have a question .. would people reading this thread who do not have ancestors in the Dublin area but ancestors from the north of Ireland be interested in a three day meet in Belfast next year? The reason I ask this question is on the Belfast Forum I've been in touch with a couple of guys who organise a wide variety of tours including genealogy tours for groups and for extended family groups. They advised me that they'd be delighted to assist me getting genealogy meets and tours in NI off the ground. The UHF run one but I feel there is room for a least another one.

Some of you may be travelling to Ireland for the first time so here are some ferry routes.
Enter the most suitable route in Google to find which ferry line covers the route.

You're close Damsel,

If the other months do not catch up the next vote will be to decide which weekend and not the month which looks as though it will probably be June.

Is everyone organising their own accommodation or will some need it to be booked?

Hiya Mark,

Thanks for your message.

May I put your name on the list as a provisional? That would start the ball rolling? Watch the Belfast event closely though as I'm having a discussion with a Scottish member at the moment which may result in a trial run for a much larger event a few years from now.

Best Wishes, Chris

UPDATE

This event will take place in June 2007.

Would those attending or interested in attending but have not yet added their names to the list like another poll to decide which weekend to hold the event or should we go for the last weekend in June.

Could a few of the Irish members come up with suggestions for a few events please? So far in that respect I've a speaker willing to give us a talk ... we may have to pay her but I received a surprise email yesterday so there's now another event on the programme .. a trio of musicians. I met a lady at a dinner in Dublin on Saturday. I told her about our Meet. Yesterday when I came home there was an email waiting from this lady ... here's part of her message ..."... June 2007 sounds great.. my sister, brother and I sing....would be happy to do a gig for you in June!! :-) " Another email arrived from her this morning ... "I play the guitar - no payment!!!! :-) Jenny X "

hi all,
I thought this link might be of interest to the more energetic
rootschatters visiting dublin.but I have to say christopher if the weather
in june is as hot as last year then your idea of a talk in the open air
might  just be the way to go.

Hi Chris,
Do we have a final date yet.
Title: Re: Roots Chat Meet Dublin 2007 Friday - Sunday
Post by: Canuc on Sunday 01 April 07 01:33 BST (UK)
Chris,

Part of me says yeah lets do it, the other half remembers reading a previous post about the prospect of meeting people who know so much more and being frightening. I understand we all started somewhere, but its not helped by the fact that I am hard up against a wall on my paternal line and feeling useless.

I understand it is to be June, have you been able to pin down the date yet (work and choral commitments have to be balanced with leisure)? I'm in Bristol, so making the journey over is not so problematic.

Have you a draft "Order Of The Day" it will be a delicate process to balance the desire to do some hard graft searching, have a discussion and gain an understanding of new lines of enquiry and the social time. Good luck to you my friend.

A thought for a speaker:
One visit to Dublin a few years ago I was in the City Reference Library on Pearse Street. Collectively the staff could not have been more helpful. They certainly used their knowledge of their collection to help find a way through to an answer producing relevant documents I hadn't requested. Might they be approached for a talk/tour?

Regards
Canuc

Hiya Canuc,

Thanks for your post.

The Meet is being held on 22nd - 24th June.

There are three threads about it at the moment. They're pinned on the  Ireland - General board.  (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php? topic=148893.msg681331#msg681331)

Thanks Sharon.

I wonder if anyone knows of a hall in Dublin where we could gather for a few hours on either Friday or Saturday evening. It's somewhat difficult trying to organise everything when one is a hundred miles away. Are there no Dublin RootsChatters willing to assist? I'm surprised that there's not more enthusiasm for this event from members in Dublin considering this may be quite a large event.

Look out for posts from Mo too. She'll be making a few phone calls and sending emails. She told me that if people are looking for accommodation the rates in Dublin city centre are high so it's better to look for somewhere to stay on the outskirts. If anyone in the Dublin area is prepared to put other RootsChatters up for a night or two please contact Mo or myself. At the moment I think most people are making their own arrangements but there may be some latecomers adding their names to the list at the last moment.

Right Gang,

I have found a Pub that has a function room in a central (and Safe) part of town who would be happy to let us loose on the Friday night.

Bishop Street (the national Archives) are open 10.00 - 17.00 Monday - Friday and anyone who wants to go here should read the following web site for readers tickets requirements:

http://www.nationalarchives.ie/contactus/tickets.html

The GRO in Joyce House too is only open from 9.30 a.m to 4.30 p.m. for the purpose of searching the indexes to birth, death and marriage records and obtaining photocopies / certificates Now the research room isn't the biggest and they only allow people in on a first come first served basis.  The costs are.

There are two types of searches available to the public. These are for the indexes only.

A particular search to a maximum of 5 years for a fee of €2.00.

A general search for one day covering all years for a fee of €20.00

charges for photocopies are extra.

I spoke to the National Library today and while they have no objection in principle to a group coming to the Library it would have to be done with prior arrangement so not to cause to much disruption to the regular users of the library reading rooms.

They can organise a tour of the library and advice on what the collections hold and how to access the information but it would be advisible to arrange this in advance.
I do doubt if the whole group would get in at once. But after the tour I am sure that some of the group would managed to get readers tickets and be able to access the collections.

There is another library in Pearse Street which does also hold some great collections and is well worth a visit.

Hotels in Dublin city centre can be rather pricey.... but there are a couple of Reasonable hotels around

Jurys Inns

http://www.jurys-dublin-hotels.com/jurysinn_parnellstreet

http://www.jurys-dublin-hotels.com/jurysinn_christchurch

Bewleys Hotels

http://www.bewleyshotels.com/ballsbridge_hotel_dublin.asp

Of course it is possible to find hotels in Dublin that are better than these in fact there are some really nice hotels and guest houses  and all are available to book on the net.

If there are any other questions I can help anyone with please do get in touch.

I don't think that just the Friday and Saturday would be enough if people want more research time.

but Dublin a great place for a party.... would be great to meet up with you all

Mo

Mo, you were online since my last post but I see no reply. We could all be wandering around Dublin
on Friday week trying to find the pub you mentioned in your message on Wednesday 4th April.
