Chelmsford Assizes Proceedings
« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 08:24 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have found some interesting entries in the England and Wales Criminal Registers for Chelmsford Assizes now available on Ancenstry.com. Does anyone know if the full proceedings are available for viewing at either Kew or the ERO?
Cheers,
Steve.

Aside from the advice given on Ancestry regarding possible TNA archives, your best bet is the ERO.
Go to SEAX, their online catalogue.
http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/
In the Document Reference search box top right type> Q/SMc

You'll then have listed all the  Calendars of prisoners for Essex Quarter Sessions and Essex Assizes they have in their collection. Many of the images you can view online. Not all the Calenders are preserved. Most of the Calenders will provide a little more information on the offences.
There are several other Court records in the ERO but this is a good starting point.
The other option is newspaper records in the ERO (not online)
Or try the British Library's 19th century newspaper collection.

More info on my website.

Hope this helps

Keldon,
Thanks for that - very useful for 1838, 64, 66 and 68. Can I assume that the records for 1843 and 1864 are missing? Those are two more dates of interest to me.
Steve.

Possibly, but as I remarked, there may be other court records, you will need to search the catalogue to find the other records. Try keywords such as Assize(s), Sessions, Trials, Indictment(s), etc.
